Gayathry is Student of the Year

On another beautiful Awards Evening in the sparkling atmosphere of The Rainbow Club on Friday, nearly 80 students were honoured for their various achievements in secondary school last year.  A few new awards were introduced such as Mildred’s Athlete of the Year and The Wiltshire Prize donated by Ms Mudondo.  There were several students who picked up more than one award but clearly the most successful student of the night was Gayathry Venugopal.  Now in Year 12, Gayathry joined Rainbow in January 2000 in Year 1 and has become our most successful IGCSE student ever with 9 A*s.  Congratulations to Gayathry who, apart from winning prizes for English and Drama and for her outstanding IGCSE results, was named Rainbow’s ‘Student of the Year.’  It was a very close decision and she had just 2 more votes than last year’s headboy, Mugabi Byenkya (18 to 16) in a ballot of all the secondary school teachers.  The evening reached a spectacular climax with Mrs. Kotecha & Mrs. Kapoor from the Midland Group of Companies presenting Gayathry with a special trophy to keep as well as one million shillings in cash.  Incidentally this report has been typed for you by another of the night’s big winners.  Annet Kiiza won the C. A. Green Cup for Services to Rainbow along with 500,000/= for 11½years of excellent service as the secondary school secretary. NOTE: If you didn’t collect a programme at the end of the event on Friday you can get one from Lydia.

Inter house swimming gala

It was a colourful and exciting day on Friday as almost every child in Key Stage 2 took part in the inter house swimming gala. Kyoga started well by winning the first race and Impala also had some early victories, but it was soon clear that the struggle for first place was between Ssesse and Rwenzori. There were many strong individual performances but in the end Rwenzori held their lead to take the cup.

The final results were as follows:

Rwenzori                 221   points

Impala                     183   points

Ssesse                     200   points

Kyoga                      155   points

‘Is this really maths?’

Just how many ways are there to attach 5 multilink cubes together? The investigating maths club set to the challenge of finding out with great enthusiasm on Tuesday. Rinaoldo (2CK) and Braham (3PK) found 9 ways, Kathleen (2M), Ife (3GS) and Daniella (3SV) found 10 ways, but the champions of the day were Felix (3SV), Daniel (3GS) and Dhyanam (2M) who found 11 ways of attaching the cubes together! Are there 12? Have a go; you just need a pile of multilink or you can cut squares out of card if you wish to try it at home. But remember that you need to test your pentominoes are not repetitions of a pattern you have already done by rotating them and flipping them over to make sure you have indeed found a new pattern. Use squared or dotted paper to record your pentominoes if you want to prove how many you have found. Mrs. Dralega

RAINBOW BOOK WEEK

It’s Book Week in the Primary School!  The theme this year is FOOD.  This is a chance to explore the many ways in which writers have used all kinds of food in stories, poems, plays, newspaper articles, non-fiction books, and many more…

There will be a range of fun classroom activities focusing on food, as well as the following whole school events:

Ø  Book Worms’ Reading Tent every playtime and lunchtime

Ø  Book Buddies on Wednesday

Ø  Dress Up Day on Friday: a chance to dress up as your favourite book character or book (sandwich board style usually works well)

Ø  Whole school assembly on Friday, which includes a costume parade and announcements of the winners for each competition

The exciting competitions this year are:

1.        Donate a Book: This is a chance to share with others the books you have enjoyed so much.  The final count will be on Thursday, so don’t delay.

2.        Writing competition: We are looking for a range of interesting writing with food as a central part.  The judge this year is Mr. Edwards, who will announce the winners in each year group in Friday’s assembly.  Please hand your entries to your class teacher.  The closing date is Tuesday, 7th February.

3.        Costume Parade: As part of Dress Up Day, everyone in costume will join the parade during assembly and automatically be entered in the competition.  The person with the most creative costume in each year group will be chosen as winners.

Book Week is not just for children ─ parents and teachers can join in too.  Everyone can get involved by reading non-fiction and other books to children, encouraging children to participate in the competitions, and joining in the costume parade.  We hope everyone will enjoy the week.  Happy reading!

Mrs. Bisasso & Ms Imalingat.

Science Fair

The science department will be launching a science week starting Monday 13th February with a whole week of activities culminating in the science fair on Friday 17th February 2012.  There will be many exciting and fun activities and displays throughout the week and at the science fair including a reptile display, volcanic eruptions, fruit batteries, a forensic area and lot, lots more.

How can you become involved?

- If you are Year 7, 8 or 9 you could work on a science project of your choice and if your project gets selected then you could display it at the science fair and get a prize.

- You could be selected to take on teams from other schools in a science challenge.  Five other schools have been invited who will bring along their best scientific brains in Year 7, 8 and 9 to come and tussle it out with Rainbow students.

- If you are not in Key Stage 3 do not despair!  You could enter the Science poetry competition or the science art competition which are open on any scientific theme.  The winning entries will receive prizes.   Look out for more information on how to enter.

- Come and be part of the science week activities.

- We will of course need lots of volunteers to help manage the event.

We are counting on your participation and support to make the day a memorable one. Ms Geria Head of Science KS4 and 5
