Gayathry is Student of the Year On another beautiful Awards Evening in the sparkling atmosphere of The Rainbow Club on Friday, nearly 80 students were honoured for their various achievements in secondary school last year. A few new awards were introduced such as Mildred’s Athlete of the Year and The Wiltshire Prize donated by Ms Mudondo. There were several students who picked up more than one award but clearly the most successful student of the night was Gayathry Venugopal. Now in Year 12, Gayathry joined Rainbow in January 2000 in Year 1 and has become our most successful IGCSE student ever with 9 A*s. Congratulations to Gayathry who, apart from winning prizes for English and Drama and for her outstanding IGCSE results, was named Rainbow’s ‘Student of the Year.’ It was a very close decision and she had just 2 more votes than last year’s headboy, Mugabi Byenkya (18 to 16) in a ballot of all the secondary school teachers. The evening reached a spectacular climax with Mrs. Kotecha & Mrs. Kapoor from the Midland Group of Companies presenting Gayathry with a special trophy to keep as well as one million shillings in cash. Incidentally this report has been typed for you by another of the night’s big winners. Annet Kiiza won the C. A. Green Cup for Services to Rainbow along with 500,000/= for 11½years of excellent service as the secondary school secretary. NOTE: If you didn’t collect a programme at the end of the event on Friday you can get one from Lydia. Prefects Gayathry is also one of the newly appointed Year 12 prefects. On Thursday 16th September during assembly time, Mr. Toscano introduced the 2010/2011 prefect body and their various positions. It is interesting to note that on top of the five already existing positions namely; Common room prefect, Environmental prefect, Primary prefect, Sports prefect and Social prefect, four new ones were introduced. They are; Library prefect, Uniform prefect, Discipline prefect and Lunch area prefect. The prefects will also carry out break, lunch time and after school duties. Below is the detailed prefect list and the various duties. The break, lunch time and after school duty rota is displayed on various noticeboards. I hope we all give our prefects the deserved respect and adhere to the instructions. Today & tomorrow Rainbow International School will hold the largest so far annual International Careers Fair at Sheraton hosting universities, colleges and agencies from UK, Malaysia, Australia, South Africa, Europe, Canada, USA and India. There will also be several local universities present. Rainbow students from Years 11, 12 & 13 will attend the fair. This will be a great opportunity On Monday lunchtime a large crowd gathered on the field to watch the staff demonstrate their various levels of football skill as the Noel Mugume shoot-out reached its finale. Already leading from the earlier rounds, the Impala staff team of Mr. Kalanzi, Mr. Musau, Ms Thorn, Mr. Kawuma and Mr. Avis who was the goalkeeper, simply extended the lead with 9 goals scored including the conversion of all 5 shots against Ssesse. The final results:
We had the first infant assembly of the year on Thursday. 2S presented lots of information about famous people. The children even interviewed Rainbow’s very own famous person, Coach Max who has been competing as a professional swimmer since he was 12 years old. Another of our PE department is about to represent her country in the Commonwealth games in India. Do you know who that it? Perhaps Year 2 should interview her too when she gets back! In the Key Stage 2 assembly 5CO presented a series of lively skits which had the audience laughing throughout. Jordan’s ‘grumpy sweetshop owner’ was particularly well acted. Well done to both classes. Key Stage 2 inter-house skipathon begins tomorrow – Tuesday 21st September at lunch time 1:00p.m. on the small field. On Saturday mornings at 9:00 there are football coaching clinics for primary & secondary school children. The secondary school letter was collected by those interested last week.
