Guest Speakers Revealed! As many of you probably realised the two guest speakers in the secondary school assemblies last week were actually the two shortlisted candidates for the post of secondary school headteacher to replace Mr. Green when he becomes the Principal in August. Mr. John Toscano gave us a very interesting and thought provoking assembly on Wednesday on why we should think about serving our community and helping the less fortunate while Mr. Joe Davey, on Friday, presented us with a lively few minutes on why we should all take up some physical activity in our lives. The two gentlemen each spent a day at Rainbow seeing the school and going through various interviews and now a decision has to be made. We will inform parents of our decision very soon. International Talent Show This is to remind all junior students (11 to 15 years) that auditions will commence today 27th and end on Thursday 29th January 2009. It will take place in the main hall at 3:00 – 4:00p.m. during club time. Please make sure you have registered with your Student Board representative by lunchtime. Thank you. Performing Arts Department (Music /Drama) English Challenge It was a closely contested competition with Impala managing to triumph by only one point over Kyoga, thanks to the winning team headed by Sanjana. Rwenzori and Ssesse took third and fourth position respectively. Thank you all for accepting to be challenged. Football Round-Up On Friday 16th January a senior match took place at Rainbow which was accidentally omitted from last week’s newsletter. It ended in a 2-2 draw with Blackboys. Chris Kaddu & Jonathan Bucyana scored the Rainbow goals. Last Thursday we had 3 matches against KISU and failed to win any of them. The U10 boys drew 1-1 with a late equaliser from Nyok. Then the U12 boys team almost made a dramatic recovery from 3-0 down at half time but ended up losing 3-2 with goals from Vincent and Joshua. Meanwhile the U12 girls drew 1-1 at KISU with Helena scoring our goal. On the same day the staff were involved in a spectacular 12 goals match which we lost 7-5. Our goals were scored by Sunday, Mr. Urquhart (2) and Robert (2). This Thursday we have 3 primary school fixtures against Ambrosoli. Science block officially open On Friday evening Mr. Wang from the Chinese Embassy officially opened the new secondary school science laboratories and maths classrooms. He was given a guided tour of the impressive new facilities and delivered a short speech to a gathering of teachers, parents and directors of the school before cutting the ribbon to declare the premises open even though, of course, we have been using them for some time now. A message from Hospice On behalf of the Hospice Team, patients & families, I would like to thank you for your generous contribution of donating Christmas gifts towards our patients. They were all given to patients as Christmas gifts by Father Christmas and they really put a smile on their faces and their families. You made a big difference in the lives of our patients by bringing back hope and love. We are very much impressed by the love the children show to our work. Once again thank you very much and may God bless you. Nina Shalita – Chief Executive Director, Hospice Africa Artwork of the week The first Artwork of the week this term is by SMRITI NAVEEN Year 13F for her representational composition of animal in its natural habitat. Well done Smriti. Please also note that the Artwork of the week noticeboard has been moved from outside Room 1 to the notice board outside room 11. Mr. Ufoyuru Service Summit On Thursday, 29th January 2009 Michael, Michelle, Peter, Liz, Gracia, Joanna and Mrs. Bisasso will attend the four-day Service Summit Africa held at ISU and the Sheraton and represent RISU among 18 other international schools from the African continent. The students will present their service successes of the C.A.R.E committee and hold a workshop focusing on the work C.A.R.E did for the Masaka Vocational & Rehabilitation Centre. Students would like to establish and build partnerships with other schools through this hopefully interactive experience. Primary School News Assemblies 2N put on an exciting assembly in which the children danced, sung and told us what they would like to be when they grow up. They concluded the assembly with a fashion show displaying a lot of confidence and enthusiasm. Well done 2N. Thank you 4LP for your ‘timely reminder’ about the importance of punctuality in the KS2 assembly this week. It was very enjoyable. Remember to keep an eye on the time this week everyone! This weekend (31st January) please make sure you have your hair thoroughly checked for nits and head lice. Since our last bug-busting several parents have reported that it has been effective in controlling the frequency of infestation – so let’s all join in again – it works! Spelling Bee Do you love words? Do spellings trip easily off your pencil? This competition is for you! This Friday lunchtime, in the hall, we will have our first spelling competition. Starting with Year 3, each week a different year group will have a chance to have a go. Sign up sheets will be sent to Year 3 classrooms this week – each house will be able to have 5 super-spellers. As it is our first Bee, you will be given 5 common words at random but you will also be given 5 words that you will have 1 night to learn. You won’t be writing the words down – you will spell them verbally. You may notice poems appearing here and there on noticeboards and walls. They’re not for any particular reason – just for us to enjoy. And by the way, we have many talented writers – did you know you can write a poem for no reason at all – don’t wait until your teacher asks you – when you have the first rumblings of an idea -put pen to paper, play with words and see what happens. Thank you 6CW for the poems you e-mailed to me. I enjoyed reading them. Mrs. Dralega Welcome back Mrs. Volrath Mrs. Mohan & Miss Webster will both be off school for a while due to illness. We are very grateful to Mrs. Volrath for stepping in at such short notice to cover Miss Webster’s Year 6 class. Welcome also to Mrs. Helen Jungmayr who is helping out in the early years classes for a term. Volleyball serving competition This Thursday lunchtime there will be an interhouse volleyball serving competition. See Miss Nakibuuka for more details.
