Sign language club visited by the deaf During our club time we had two special visitors from “Deaf Link Uganda.” Meeting deaf people for the first time was a great and awesome experience. They taught us many signs of animals, fruits, greetings and words used in our daily lives. They were very polite, kind and exciting, and used lots of vibrant facial expressions. They taught us in a very friendly way. It was absolute silence and amazing to enjoy learning without sound! It felt like living in a very quiet and peaceful world! At first we felt sad that they could neither speak nor hear, like us. But gradually they made us feel comfortable. We realised that they are very intelligent and important to us and that it is alright to be deaf! When club time ended it was strange to get back into the noisy outside world. “I didn’t feel like talking I just wanted to be quiet.” There should be Sign Language schools where everyone can have an opportunity to learn such a unique language. That way we can all communicate with deaf people, so we can benefit from the richness of their language and that they too don’t feel left out. We are grateful to our visitors for the privilege of interacting and communicating with them. They helped us to learn in a friendly way as well as being thoroughly entertained! Feelings shared by pupils attending Sign Language Club. Ms Kiyaga PS3 Competition CARE Project is planning for a trip to Watoto Children’s Village which will be open to all secondary school students.
