Safety Awareness Week

What an interesting week this has been.  At the start (last Monday) we could hardly give out any stickers for wearing seatbelts because so many children were arriving without them on.  By Tuesday, the numbers arriving with seatbelts on had risen and by Thursday almost everyone arrived with their seatbelts on.  Well done!  We are grateful to Mr. Oscar of White Lines for fitting new belts and repairing broken ones on his buses.  If you find your belt is not working on your bus, please report it to the bus attendant so it can be repaired as soon as possible.  Some children may not have been seen wearing their seatbelt if they arrived after stickers were distributed, so some stickers have been sent to classes for teachers to distribute.

Assemblies

In line with the safety week theme, Mr. Green presented two highly creative and entertaining assemblies for Infants and Juniors this week.  In the Infant assembly the audience was taken completely by surprise when Barnaby Bear ‘spoke’ and told us about his trip to Kenya.  Kaya, Aarya, Jonah & Gano presented their rap about the seatbelt message too.  In the Key Stage 2 assembly, Mr. Green interviewed a mystery gentleman called Mr. D. Seast who had failed to wear his seatbelt on the school bus.  There was a lot of laughter in both assemblies and we remember messages when presented in such a lively way.  Let’s keep this message uppermost in our minds “Pull and Click Every Trip!”

Year 6 Job Application for Responsibility Posts

There were 5 jobs advertised with full job description.  There were application forms to be filled in and letters of application to be written.  Some children included recommendations from classmates and teachers.  Interviews were held in Mrs. Dralega’s office during lunch and play breaks.  Each interviewee had thought through their reasons for applying for the job and gave clear sensible and logical answers to the questions.  Their composure and clarity were quite impressive.  Considering this is their first journey into the world of work, these young people have shown promising ability to present themselves well, take responsibilities seriously and think through solutions to problems.
The following positions were filled:
Librarians:

Darsh, Mokgadi, Fatima

Breaktime Officer:

Nathaniel

Assembly Engineers:

Aron, Selam, John

Play specialists:

Jana, Harley, Celine, Vincent

Reading buddies:

Shumaila, Natasha, Maya, Charis, Sa'adatu, Kirabo, Ntale, Cynthia, Georgina, Aurora

The breaktime officer has recruited a team of three to assist once the new playtime ropes and hoops are available. Mrs. Dralega

12M have attitude

In Thursday’s assembly Year 12M performed an interesting series of sketches looking at different attitudes.  The simple message is that a positive attitude matters and can make a real difference.  Mr. Toscano

PSA Biathlon

Swim …. Run ….. Raise Money!  Entries are starting to come in for the Biathlon, which is on Saturday 30th January.  Come and join the fun!  Entry forms from Lydia at Reception.  If you are really desperate to avoid exercise, you can still come to the lunchtime barbecue at Rainbow Club.  Mr. Toscano

Thank you to Mr. Toscano for organising this event and I hope it will be a success and everyone will enjoy it.  It should be a FUN day and raise lots of money as long as all the participants work hard at collecting the money from their sponsors after the event.  This is crucial to the event’s success, of course, as well as having fun on the day.  We give you a week to get the money and bring it to Myf who will receipt your form and give you a certificate of participation.  We hope it will not be too hot for the runners but we will have the nurse on duty with us in case of any first aid emergency.  I have put up reminders of the procedure for taking part in the Biathlon on the PSA noticeboard and the noticeboard at the front of the school.  A. Thomas PSA Chairperson

Rugby News

We wish to inform all rugby players that one of the rules of the IRB on school rugby is that each player should have a mouth guard and a pair of shin guards.  We have some arrangements for you to purchase the above items from the school at a competitive rate.   There shall be various sizes for each age group.  They shall be available in two weeks time and can be purchased from Myf, the school PRO.  As from February 7th no player shall be allowed onto the pitch without these two vital pieces of equipment.  Our first match shall be on the 12th or 13th of February to select the team to play during the World Cup Fun Day. Coach Mbungu.

No eating in the changing rooms please
A habit has developed of secondary school children eating their snack and packed lunch in the changing rooms.  Not only does this make the changing rooms messy, but it also adds to a security problem.  Last week a student had 150,000/= stolen from the changing rooms.  During lesson times the changing rooms should be locked at all times.  At lunchtime and after school this is not possible because of so may different groups participating in sport but, at these times, the changing rooms should be used for changing only.  Anyone found loitering around this area will be treated with suspicion.

Exams continue

Year 11 mocks continue this week and end next Monday 1st February.  Please maintain silence in the area of rooms 17, 18 & 19.

Eye screening

On Wednesday eye screening for all primary school children will begin in the primary school TV room.  Towards the middle of next week it will be the turn of secondary school to have their eyes tested.

Well done to the students for your participation and the teachers for accompanying our teams.  Then on Sunday Mrs. Dralega was the special guest on Desert Island Discs on Capital FM.  How many of you heard that?
