RAINBOW BOOK WEEK This week the Primary School will be celebrating Book Week. The theme this year is non-fiction. It’s a wonderful opportunity to learn more about almost anything through books: stone age man, crazy inventions, famous people, Nigerian recipes, microscopic bugs, the list goes on... There will be a range of fun classroom activities focusing on non-fiction, as well as the following whole school events: Rainbow came a close second in the primary school cross country event at KISU last Thursday. The U11 boys, led home by some distance by Vincent, won their category and our U11 girls and U9 boys came second behind Aga Khan in their categories. The U9 girls came third in their category. Tendo, like Vincent, won his race in the U9s very impressively. The U9s ran a course of 1.5km and the U11s ran the course twice. The overall table was: 51 Year 8 students set out last Friday for a camping weekend at Lake Mburo, accompanied by Mr. Urquhart, Mrs. Kakumba, Mrs. Bukuutu, Mr. Toscano and Mr. Avis. The trip included a game walk with an armed ranger, a boat trip to view hippos and crocodiles and an impromptu game of rugby in which no mercy was shown to the teachers. The students had to contend with various wild animals which wandered amongst the tents at night, as well as having to pack up their tents on Sunday morning in the middle of a thunderstorm. Most were up to the challenge and overall, everyone had a lot of fun and also managed to learn more about the environment and wildlife management in Uganda. The only complaint came from a few students, who thought the trip was too short and would like to have stayed longer. Thank you, Lake Mburo, and see you again soon. Mr. Toscano In preparation for the upcoming Talent Show there is an increasing demand from participants to use the Performing Arts facilities. However, we emphasise that the rules (as indicated on the doors and on the Student Board notice board) should be strictly followed and discipline should be greatly observed. The Talent Show will be a successful event if we work as a team, remain focused and use the Performing Arts facilities with respect. Therefore we will not tolerate the facilities to be used as social hangouts. Register now for World Cup Fun Day Just as the PSA biathlon is completed (full report next week), the next big PSA event appears on the horizon. In 4 weeks time on 27th February the 11th Rainbow PSA World Cup Fun Day takes place. As usual you will be able to hire a stall or participate in the many activities taking place on the day. The PSA will communicate details very soon. We also would appreciate any sponsorship or donation of prizes towards the event. The main focus of the day as always is the soccer. Primary school will make arrangements for their competitions but students have to register if they wish to enter a team for the senior events. In the case of the boys we need just 8 more teams as Brookhouse School from Nairobi are providing 2 teams. It is a senior event and probably will only be suitable for Year 10 students and above. Registration forms and a set of rules can be acquired from Lydia for 25,000/=. During lunchtimes last week the Year 4s participated in the penalty shoot out. Just as with Year 3s the week before there was lots of excitement and some very good shooting (and goalkeeping). In total Impala & Ssesse scored 11 goals each but Impala won the head to head match, Rwenzori scored 7 and Kyoga 5. The results: - 1st Impala 20pts, 2nd Ssesse 15pts, 3rd Rwenzori 10pts & 4th Kyoga 5pts. This week it is the turn of Year 5. With only two weeks left till the delegates leave for Nairobi the delegates debated Portugal’s human rights resolution in last week’s EAMUN session. It gave the delegates a feel of what it will be like in the real debating chambers. As delegates prepare the official note paper for their country, they are also preparing for the next mock debate where the EU’s resolution will be debated. Gayathry V. Press Corps A total of 41 children from KS2 took part in painting competitions this week. They had just 30 minutes to paint a scene from a given book extract. Year 6 were given The ‘Butterfly Lion’ by Michael Morpurgo, and Year 5 had ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ by Roald Dahl. The winners of the competition were: Year 6 – Jana, Daniel M & Natasha, Year 5 – Rahel & Nyasha There will be an ice-cream sale next Friday at lunchtime. Make sure to bring your money for great ice cream. Mugabi Everyone involved should attend a meeting today at 1:15 in room 15. Watch out for ‘The Zone’ coming soon … Mugabi This week’s Artwork of the week is by NICOLE LWANGA 9K for her stunning painting entitled “wild ducks.” Well done, Nicole. 15 & U at KISU on 23rd Jan Kevin Rec O, Elijah Rec H, Hekimo 1MO, Ashraf 1W, Daniel 1K, Kesiime 2S, Belinda 2N, Arnold 2M, Damatos 3V, Rachel 3PK, Tamana 3MK, Fadil 4LP, Daniel 4R, Benjamin 4S, Kaya 5B, Hazel 5O, John Jean 5V, Natalie 6S & Karanja 6PW Both infant and junior assemblies were non-fiction based this week. It was good to hear some of the realities of the explorers’ early experiences. Thank you to both classes. In the secondary school assembly on Thursday 12U showed how the response that students have to their mock exams can determine how well or badly they do in the final exams. Unfortunately the Year 11s were not there to watch as they are still doing their mock IGCSEs. You will see the winning posters around school this week. The winners of the competition are: On Wednesday the senior football team had their first outing of the year drawing 3-3 with Young Academy, Nemanja scored all three Rainbow goals. On Friday the Rainbow staff team drew 2-2 with Right Pearl. Robert and Coach Henry scored for Rainbow. |
