Elections coming up soon

This Thursday, the secondary school assembly will allow a better insight into the 5 candidates for the job of Headgirl/boy 2010/2011.  The next day, Friday, during form time, all Year 6 up to Year 13 students will be able to vote for their favourite candidates.   The voting process will be explained briefly during the assembly.  The results will be announced before the end of the day.

NB: Today at lunch time the cross country team will walk through the route.  All students who received invitation letters should assemble at the main field by 1:00p.m. Mildred

EAMUN

Delegates were quizzed on their countries and answered all questions excellently.  We then moved into a debate where we debated the EU’s resolution so that we can see potential arguments for and against it and thus strengthen the resolution.  The debate was on forest fires in Indonesia.  The resolution passed with an obvious majority. Year 3 / 4Art Competition

This week Year 3 and 4 had painting competitions.  68 children in total took part and all showed much enthusiasm for their given tasks which was to illustrate a poem.  Year 4 had ‘The Marvellous Trousers” by Richard Edwards and Year 3 were given “Cherry Croak” by Tony Mitton. Year 3 winners: Sherice, Alice and Ethan.  Year 4 winners: Naoeme, Lauryn and Jeremiah.  Thank you and well done to all participants!

PSA Biathlon

This was the first event of its kind and attracted 36 competitors, as well as many spectators who sat by the poolside, cheered the participants and enjoyed the barbecue laid on by Rainbow Club.  The theme of the event was participation and it was delightful to see such a range of ages, sizes and levels of physical fitness.  The youngest children were first to take part and the results in the mini category were: -  1st Gano Othow, 2nd Ahmad Barry, 3rd Megan Bolingbroke
The next event was the intermediate, where competitors were divided into two categories: -
Lower Intermediate: -  1st Vincent Green, 2nd Tendo Sebuyira, 3rd Luke Gallagher
Higher Intermediate: - 1st Nicholas Verkoyen, 2nd Christopher Green, 3rd Tomoichi Ishiura.

By the time the higher event started at 11:00a.m, it was getting very hot and the gruelling 5km cross-country course took its toll.  Swimming coach Samuel Katwere swam further than required but still managed to win overall, just ahead of teacher Duncan Weller.
1st Samuel Katwere, 2nd Duncan Weller, 3rd Mohamed Abdi.
PE teacher Johann Urquhart could only manage 4th but in fairness to him, he had been out on the course since 7a.m. laying down markers and running all over the place helping out.  Sponsorship of the event has so far raised over 700,000/=, which will go towards purchase of reference books for the library.  This looks like becoming an annual even so start training for next year!

Book Week

Non-fiction was the theme of this year’s book week and there were many activities to enable us to explore information texts.  The reading tent was well used during break times and snuggle up in Kindergarten managed to link their topic to the refreshments we enjoyed on the day. Kindergarten children have been learning about machines and so the children used two very helpful machines to make fresh juice and toasted sandwiches.  I am sure you can guess which two machines they have used!  It was lovely to see teachers from all parts of school and parents too, joining in to read non-fiction texts to the children and the juice was delicious!  In assembly on Friday we learned that over 500 books have already been donated for local schools and the Uganda Community Libraries Association.  We are very lucky to have access to lots of high quality reading materials and it is great that we are able to give other children a chance to read a range of texts.  Thank you for your generosity.  During our book week assembly we also had a chance to listen to Hannah Adams, Ssuna David and Mrs. Mbuga talk about their interests.  Hannah spoke about her interests in animals, Ssuna, his fascination with science and astronomy while Mr. Mbuga loves reading autobiographies.   Thank you for sharing your interests with us – we look forward to learning more from you.  The winners of the ‘writing about Rainbow’ competition judged by Mr. Green were Rajveer in 2N and Alexia in 4MS.

Year 9 Camping Trip

Year 9s went on the last camping trip of the academic year 2009/2010 by adventuring to the Eastern region of Uganda.  On the weekend of 29th – 31st Jan Year 9s left at 9:00a.m. heading off to camp on the slopes of Mt. Elgon in Budadiri.  The traffic within Kampala meant we did not actually leave till 10a.m.   These were views about the trips from some Year 9s.
Extraordinary, fabulous, fantastic, incredible, marvellous but also a very tiring weekend.  Although it was a long journey, taking almost 6 hours to arrive at our destination (Rose’s Last Chance – RLC), the whole experience was rewarding.  The food was really good, the waterfalls were spectacular – some of us swam in them.   Some people just enjoyed the evening by gazing up at the sky as they watched the moon emerge from behind the mountain, it was amazing.  The walk to the caves was a killer.  The highlight when we got there and throughout the weekend was our “rappers” who featured Kennechupuli (Kenneth), J.O.N.A (Jonathan), Wassman (Wassajja), Geezy (Osman) and Mrs. G. (Mrs. Green).  Yes Mrs. Green joined in with the rappers and yah she is “G”.  We really had a good time which was surprising as most of us were a little apprehensive that the trip would be boring and uninteresting.  That was not true at all because most of us enjoyed it so much that on the way home, some people said they wished they could stay a bit longer but we had to return to school on Monday.  Thank you to all the teachers who came with us (Miss Thorn, Mr. Fugill, Ms Grignard, Mr. Kalanzi and Mrs. Green)

A Mixed Sports Week

On Wednesday 3rd February our U16 girls took part in an evening basketball tournament at KISU.  We lost 17-2 to KISU and 13-5 to ISU.  The performance against ISU was a big improvement and Rainbow only trailed by one point at the half way stage before running out of energy in the second half.  It was a similar tale of woe for our girls when we visited the same venue on Friday for an U16 soccer fixture.  Against more skillful and fitter opponents our girls lost 8-0.  On the adjacent field our U16 boys won 11-5 with goals from Nahyan (3), Cheikh (3), Marko (2), Jonathan S (1) and 2 own goals. Back at Rainbow our staff team beat Stenah Hill staff 4-1 with Moses, Mr. Urquhart & Paul Oboloko (2) scoring.

Artwork of the week

This week’s Artwork is by CHLOE BIRUNGI 8A for her collage piece designed for a magazine cover.  Well done Chloe.
