Serbia are World Champions
We may not be saying the same on 11th July but, for the moment, Serbia are the soccer World Cup winners.  In a dramatic finale that seemed to go on for ever, Serbia beat Libya 9-8 on penalties following a 0-0 draw after extra time in the 5-a-side soccer final on Rainbow’s World Cup Fun Day on Saturday 27th February.  It meant for a late finish to a wonderful day when for the only day of that week, it didn’t rain.

A big thank you to Brookhouse School as well who came from Nairobi to enter 2 Kenya teams.  One of them reached the semi-final only to be narrowly beaten 1-0 by Serbia.  In the girls’ competition, after much persuasion from Mr. Green on the Friday before, Rainbow entered 3 teams, South Africa, Jamaica and Egypt.  2 of them contested the final with Jamaica beating South Africa 1-0 with a goal from Emma to take the trophy.  In the mini World Cups for juniors Italy beat Spain 1-0 in the boys’ final and Slovakia beat Ecuador 1-0 in the final of the girls’ competition.  The Tony Breese trophy was a tight affair.  Coach Mildred scored on the stroke of half time direct from a corner so the men had a 1-0 advantage going into the second half.  When Coach Paul made it 2-0, it looked all over.  However, the dads pulled a goal back and came very close to equalising.  The staff eventually held on at 2-1.
The rugby competition produced a great spectacle and a controversial ending just like last year.  This time it was Vienna College who were aggrieved as they thought they had drawn the final match to share the trophy with Rainbow.  However, the scorer said it was 3 tries to 2 to Rainbow and this was confirmed by the organiser and the Rainbow players themselves, so Rainbow took the Safi Sevens trophy.
… and away from the sports field it was an extremely busy day with perhaps the largest crowds ever, 51 stalls, 2 Bouncy Castles, lots of food and many games and other activities.  A new activity was the auction and Mr. Musau and Mr. Oboth did a great job at the pirate ship as they auctioned off 3 major prizes.  The raffle draws took place throughout the day which was also a new innovation although the big five prizes were saved to the finale at the end of the World Cup Final.  The winners were: -
2 return flights to Nairobi from FLY 540 won by Christina Kalafa (7M)
Home Theatre system from Midcom won by Dionne Migwi (9VG)
MP3 player from Midcom was won by Freidhelm Nietsch (7LM)
2 nights for 2 at Ssesse Beach Hotel won by Ms Thomas
2 nights in a family room at Rwenzori Guest House won by Ms Mudondo.
The day can only be successful with the commitment of the people who organise and run it.  Thank you to Anne Thomas as PSA Chairperson for her enormous effort and all the committee members, CPRs, staff and all other parents and students who helped in some way.  The list is too long to mention everyone but special mention should be given to Vincent Barnes who worked for 3 solid hours at the drinks stall and to Emma the caretaker who hardly slept all weekend as he had to attend to Brookhouse School’s needs as they ‘camped’ in the Primary School hall for the weekend.  All the support staff did a magnificent job but Moses in particular, was of great assistance throughout a very long day.

Talent Show Postponed to 1st May

For various reasons, our main sponsors for the Talent Show, Orange, were unable to launch their ticket sales and advertising campaign on 15th February as planned.  In fact, by last Friday the sales promotion still had not got off the ground. With a public holiday yesterday, it appeared that, at best, we would have just over a week to sell 1200 tickets.  A mutual agreement to postpone the event to Saturday 1st May was therefore, reached.  We are now contacting the participating schools to
make sure they can all attend.  The internal show scheduled for this Saturday will now not take place but the Rainbow representatives for the inter-schools event will be given in next week’s Weekly Rainbow and a selection of the outstanding acts that did not quite make it will perform in the secondary school assembly on 18th March.

Exams end on Wednesday

The AS/A level mocks end this Wednesday and normal timetable resumes on Thursday.  The follow up parents evening for Years 12 & 13 is on Tuesday 16th March from 4:00p.m. – 5:30p.m.

Python performance

On Thursday we were entertained in Secondary School by Nicholas Muhindo and his 4½ metre python.  Also from the Uganda Wildlife education Centre were Clare Wandera and Moses Kasujja.  Clare gave a lot of interesting and useful information about the work of the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre.  You can see Myf if you want annual membership for just 5,000/=

Creative writing Competition

The creative writing competition was concluded with a big bang.  Kemi Ruyondo in Year 8 won the Junior category (Years 7-8) while Rukia Hatibu in Year 11 won the senior category (Years 11, 12 & 13).  Because there were no entries in the middle category (Years 9 & 10) there were no winners.  Special thanks to Novida for all their wonderful prizes and Aristoc for their thoughtful prize of a popular book, Guinness Book of World Records 2010.

Mrs. Walugembe - Citizenship co-ordinator

Assemblies

Thank you Early Years for a very entertaining assembly this week.  We all thoroughly enjoyed a range of songs and presentations on office equipment and musical instruments from children in Nursery and Kindergarten.  The level of interest shown by the audience throughout and the loud and long applause at the end confirmed everyone’s appreciation of a fantastic assembly.  The performers had a great time too.  Well done! Ms Mayer

For KS2 6DW presented a very informative assembly that illustrated the processes scientists went through to bring us the vaccines and preservation methods we have today.  Thank you 6DW for clear voices and confident acting. Mrs. Dralega
