Sports Day is here It’s not so much Sports Day as Sports Week with events taking place throughout the week leading to a big finale on Friday with the sprints and class dashes in front of the whole school before the final presentation of the trophy currently held by Impala. This year there will also be a Sports Day Spirit Cup for the first time so it won’t be just your sporting skills and talents being judged but also your general support and behaviour. Details: Paint-a-bin Competition For 2 weeks the house members had been busy designing and then painting their bin. It took up most lunchtimes until the final painted bins were completed on Friday 5th March. Then a selection of independent judges analysed them under a set of criteria and came up with the overall results of: We had a report in the Weekly Rainbow 2 weeks ago on the successful trip to the Nairobi Conference at half term and on Thursday we saw some the debating re-enacted in the secondary school assembly. Thank you for showing us what went on. Well done to all of you and hopefully many others are now inspired to join the EAMUN club next year. During their Citizenship classes, Year 10 has been learning about drugs and alcohol, their uses and their dangers if abused. Hence on Tuesday 2nd March morning, the Year 10 class left Rainbow International School at around 9a.m. for Butabika Centre, Luzira. Much to the disappointment of some of the students, when we arrived, we were told we were only going to visit the drug addicts section and not the other sections. We then proceeded to a hall where thirty minutes were spent introducing each and everyone in the room after which the session kicked off with a very touching story of a young man named Allan. Allan was recovering from addiction to numerous drugs, for example marijuana and later on heroin. It all started in his secondary school when he was offered a stick of marijuana to smoke. From then on, he smoked every weekend with his new buddies and soon after he was hooked. To fund his addiction he turned to shoplifting and ended up in prison. We also heard several other equally touching stories from other recovering addicts. Even our very own teacher Mr. Lubega Edward had his own special emotional moment when he recognised one of addicts as someone with whom he went to school and university. It was entirely moving as we listened to how a teary-eyed Kato now had to live for the rest of his life with only one lung due to his drug addiction. It was a very educative session where tears were shed as people saw the light as to how devastating the effects of abusing drugs could be. In the end, we were asked to pass on all that we had learnt and this message to everyone in our school. “If you do not take drugs, do not try it and if you are already trying drugs, seek help immediately and stop. This is because you can and will get hooked on these drugs, especially heroin where after only two shots, you can’t do without it.” Thanks to Ms Mudondo, Mrs. Maloba, Mr. Lubega and Gerald for organising such an educative trip. Year 10 students. You will start to see and hear adverts for the big show scheduled for Rainbow on 1st May. Tickets will also be on sale soon. Congratulations to the winners of the auditions who will now represent Rainbow in this massive event. All members of the editorial team and anyone who wants to write for the Zone should attend a meeting on Tuesday lunchtime at 1:15p.m. Mugabi On Friday 5th March we held a poetry evening at the Rainbow Club. The atmosphere was friendly, the reading confident and some of the poems were quite moving, entertaining and sometimes just funny. Mrs. Bamwoyeraki, better known as Sophie B since her send-off in the Rainbow assembly 2 years ago when she left us after 14½ years service, read two of her poems and gave some very complimentary remarks. Thank you, Sophie, for coming and thank you to Mrs. Wakiro and Mrs. Ssemakula and all the other staff involved in organsing the event. There are still a few copies of the poetry anthology, ‘Crispy Whispers No 5’ available at 10,000/= from Lydia. The Rainbow boarding house held its first ever disco last Saturday, 6th March, and it did not pass without incident. A heavy downpour at 6:45p.m sent everyone running for cover and caused a mad scramble to protect the equipment as the event was outside. The rain subsided and by 8:00p.m. most guests had arrived and the disco was in full swing. Despite permission from the LC, an irate neighbour came in with 2 armed guards at 10:30p.m. to tell us to turn down the music. That was the signal for most of the guests to depart. The boarders would like to thank everyone who came and apologise that it ended prematurely! Rainbow’s secondary school swimming squad went to KISU on Thursday and came away with their familiar bronze medal! However, there were many good performances and several first places especially in backstroke for The senior boys had a flying start to the soccer league winning 4-3 at Taibah with goals from Stanley, Martin, Nemanja and Moussa. On Friday in the return home match we were missing several key players and lost 3-0. On Saturday we played at home to Hillside and lost 2-1 with the Rainbow goal coming from Mabok. On Tuesday we hosted Heritage for 3 soccer matches. The results were: U8 Rainbow 0 - Heritage 3, U10 Rainbow 2 – Heritage 1 (Arron V. and Arron R.), U12 Rainbow 3 – Heritage 2 (Martin, Paul & Vincent). On Wednesday the staff team beat St Gate 3-1 with goals from coach Paul, Joseph & Noah. As we draw to the end of term there is the usual buzz of activity and events. Last week kindergarten went to visit the bakery and theme park, reception class visited the Wildlife Education Centre, Year 4 visited the shoe factory as part of their topic on Roman sandals and today Year 2 will be visiting UBC and the post office in connection with their unit on communication. It was great to meet the headteachers and administrators from many of the pre-schools that fed into Rainbow last Friday. Especially as it gave them an opportunity to see where their children go afterwards. It gave us a chance to share ideas on how we can work together to ensure a smooth transition for the children and to thank them for preparing children so very, very well for primary school.
