Sports Day to go to last day drama Because of the heavy overnight and early morning rain, Friday’s Sports Day started about 2½ hours late after rearranged house meetings at 10:30a.m. It meant that there was not enough time for the secondary school high jump and long jump and biathlon to take place nor the primary school class dashes. There was still time for the usual spectacular fun and excitement that Rainbow’s Sports Day always seems to bring. At 3:15 the action came to an end with Rwenzori taking the cannon relay and when the noise had died down Mr. Toscano announced Impala as the winners of the first ever Sports Day Spirit Cup. With these scores added to the overall scoreboard including all the points from events on Tuesday and Thursday, Rwenzori’s lead is pinned back to just 6 points with the outstanding events to be completed on the last day of term. Well done to all the students, parents and staff who made it yet another wonderful Rainbow occasion. Special mention to Mr. Kalanzi whose leading of the Impala ‘congregation’ almost single handedly won the Spirit Cup and left Impala very much in contention for the overall cup which will be presented in the end of term assembly once the final result is known. House captains, you have another busy week ahead of you. Even though there are class dashes and other athletics going on, it is normal school uniform on the Friday otherwise. This is the Sports Day scoreboard with secondary school long jump, high jump and biathlon results to come:
Busy Last Week Here is a summary of activities and events taking place in this final week On Friday 36 children and 4 teachers left for Italy where they will follow an exciting itinerary that takes them through ancient baroque Rome. We will hear all about it on their return. Last week Key Stage 1 had trips to places associated with their current topics. Year 1 visited Phoenix where they saw the process of making cotton t-shirts and Year 2 had a trip related to their topic ‘Communication’ (see their report below). Meanwhile here at school Year 3 are hard at work with the preparation for their variety show ‘Year 3’s Got Talent’ which shows at the National Theatre this Thursday at 7p.m. Tickets cost 10,000/= for adults and 5,000/= for children. It is a lively mix of dance, song and hilarious sketches. Don’t miss it! Very many mums, dads and children from each of the Year 2 classes met at the Rainbow Club for their year group social on the 13th March. We swam, played, talked, laughed, and ate. What made it even more fun was that it was the boarding house day at the club too, so there were even more people to mingle with. It was a great opportunity to get to know each other in a relaxed and informal setting. Thank you class Parent Representatives for organising and now we look forward to other year group socials. Eleanor Kyayonka was a serious, determined and intelligent young lady who attended Rainbow for 6½ years gaining 2As and a C at A level in June 2005. She had just completed her degree in South Africa and was to return to embark on a master’s programme. Tragically she fell into a coma in January and never recovered. She passed away last Thursday, 3 months before her 23rd birthday. The staff and students of Rainbow International School wish to express their sadness and offer condolences to Eleanor’s parents and her surviving sister, Yvonne, who was also a former Rainbow student. Our Careers department are starting to get some results from the various applications for financial assistance to some of our students aiming for university. The following students have been awarded scholarships so far: As a follow up on our communication topic, Year 2 visited UBC and Nakawa Post Office on Monday 15th March. We had a great time and the children learnt a lot as to how TV has evolved over time and how pictures and sound reach our TV sets. Our children asked very intelligent questions to the engineer who was explaining to us. They also were able to send greetings live on Red Channel radio. At Nakawa Post Office, we wrote and posted letters, and saw how letters are sorted. Our children behaved very well and represented Rainbow very well. They made their teachers really proud. The Learning Support Department wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to the students for the marvellous performances that showcased the various skills they are learning such as paper bead making, cushion making, cooking… and also for the great and wonderful performances that they entertained us with. In addition, we would like to thank our parents for the enormous support they showed by turning up in large numbers. It was such an extraordinary evening because there were meaningful interactions. Learning Support Department. On the 12th of March the A’ level Business class visited one of the most advanced pharmaceutical companies in Africa. We were shown around the state of the art factory and then given a very informative lecture on the business environment in Uganda by the firm’s CEO Mr. Katongole. The information received from him was priceless as we got to understand how the Uganda government has thrown its weight behind investors to ensure that Uganda is an industrialised country by 2025. We then proceeded to Jinja and toured one of the oldest firms in Uganda, Nile Breweries Limited. We got to see their newly installed Club and Nile bottling plant plus the number one selling beer in Uganda called Eagle, which is made from sorghum. We got to know that Jinja was once the industrial hub of Uganda due to it’s proximity to the Owen Falls HEP dam. It was a very informative trip and went a long way in re-emphasising what we have learnt in class. The evening saw a pool tournament where Juan Carlos through dubious means managed to beat every other player. Mr. Mbungu HOD Business Department Congratulations to Godfrey & Sylvia Boarding assistant Godfrey Oyesigye was celebrating in the morning of Sports Day as his wife gave birth to their first child, a daughter called Trina. When we return on 13th April the Year 11s will have 4 weeks before their study leave begins. Before that there are many practical exams to complete. Already the PE students have had their assessment and this morning the ESL students will be taking their oral exams in Room 35. Please maintain silence in that area. Thank you to all the throwers and the ‘victims’ of ‘wet the student’ over the past week. All money raised has gone towards the Bududa appeal. The full amount raised plus the collections in reception will be handed over to a representative of the Red Cross in Friday’s assembly. Under 13 boys and girls. Girls lost both their matches without scoring any points, against ISU and Aga Khan. The boys came back from 6-0 down against KISU to win 10-8. They then went on to win the final 12 - 8 against Aga Khan. Are you interested in playing together with other women (parents or teachers welcome). shall start practice after Easter phone Bettina Grieser-Johns 0784071532 or Ruth Hyde 0772777714 if interested. Fixtures- Wednesday 24th March at home against KISU U12 girls at 3p.m. and U12 boys at 4p.m. All 11-a-side on the big field. Note: There will be no late buses. In the final game of the senior soccer league we are trying to organise the away game at Hillside for this Thursday 25th March. On Saturday, 13th March the staff team travelled to ISU and won 4-2 with Mr. Urquhart, Noah & Coach Paul scoring twice. On Friday the staff made it 5 wins in a row when they trounced The Uganda Academy 6-2 with goals from Mr. Urquhart (2) Coach Paul (2), Henry & Moses. Apart from scoring a goal Moses was also celebrating the birth of a son earlier in the day. On Friday we also had a second half appearance from former Rainbow staff captain and swimming coach, Ronnie, who was visiting from Belgium. The office will re-open at 9:00a.m. on Monday 29th March. Because of the confusion with Sports Day on Friday 8K were the only class in the school to submit housepoints. That makes the scoreboard read: |
