The 4 strings win the Talent Show

On Saturday 1st May, in possibly the most spectacular evening Rainbow International School has ever witnessed on its own campus, The 4 Strings (Leanne Cullen, Rispa Hatibu, Nicholas Fehling & Angella Kasekende) performed last but came first with their superbly delivered version of ‘Better in time’ in the International Talent Show sponsored by Orange.  There were 640 paying customers as well as several others who found ‘alternative means’ to get in and watch the show.  The organisation and preparation from Ms Imalingat, Mrs. Bisasso and Mr. Howard ensured slick changeovers and polished performances from all the participants.   Indeed it was only the extended intervention of Navio and his ‘crew’ that meant the show finished at 11o’clock p.m. approximately one hour behind schedule.

A big thank you to all the staff on duty throughout the evening and all other staff who worked so hard to make a potentially very difficult evening run so smoothly.  Very well done to the three presenters, Yvonne, Gayathry and Mugabi who linked everything so well and improvised brilliantly when the special guest arrived an hour late.

Primary School News

It has been quite a week for creativity.  Year 2 have sewn glove puppets that required quite a bit of concentration and good hand-eye coordination.  Year 5 have been exploring the colour and form of Van Gogh’s art.  They have produced fabulous versions of the story night, sunflowers and the room.  Please drop in and have a look.  Year 1 flew to Australia and explored Aboriginal art.  Year 3 have been exploring art technologies too.  Some examples of their work are on display at the bus shelter.  Reception class had a visitor from secondary school who helped them write their own mini beasts song.  A very enjoyable activity and we will have an opportunity to listen to their song in their assembly this week.  We are looking forward to that.  Speaking of assemblies 1MO presented a great assembly that reminded us of some very important things.  They gave us their very own definition of the word respect and really made us think about how we show each other respect and support.  Let’s all be mindful of how we treat each other.  1MO also gave us lots of information about forces, so this was very much a 2 in 1 assembly.  Thank you 1MO!  Key Stage 2 assembly was presented almost entirely in French.  Children from 5B and 6PW presented two very amusing sketches.  It certainly was a reminder to us to brush up on our French so that we can really listen and enjoy these assemblies.   Well done to the children who presented and Cynthia who recited a French poem to wind the assembly up. Mrs. Dralega

Primary School Choir Festival

Well done to everyone in the primary school choir for a truly brilliant performance at the Choir Festival on Thursday.  The loud applause and cheers from the audience left no doubt as to their appreciation of the outstanding quality of the performance.  It was a proud day for Rainbow.   A very special thank you to Ms Kezia and Mr. Kabuye for their hard work and commitment in training the choir.
There will be an article on the festival in today’s New Vision. Ms Mayer

Yearbook appeal

2 weeks ago we discovered a disaster when all the school photos for the year had disappeared from the shared folder.  Despite frantic searching, nothing has been recovered.  Some staff have replaced some of the pictures from their own cameras and computers (thanks in particular to Mr. Jasansky).   However, we have no pictorial record of the following major events for academic year 2009/2010 and, without them, the yearbook is going to look pretty pathetic.  If you have photos of any of these events please put them onto the yearbook folder on ‘classwork’ as soon as possible: -
Awards Evening, Careers Fair, Independence Day, Wet the teacher, Rainbow Day, Car Book Sale, ‘Aeropeor’, ‘Charlie & the Chocolate Factory’, PSA Christmas Party, Safety awareness week, Year 10 visit to Butabika, Cheese & Wine evening, EAMUN, Valentines disco, Business trip to Jinja, Year 5 trip to Discovery Centre, ‘Year3s got Talent’, all the swimming galas, all the X-country events, all the camping trips (apart from Year 7).  If you do contribute any pictures please label the folder clearly.  Let’s hope that between us we can put together a complete yearbook for 2009/10.

Class photos here

Because of the extra work Colour Chrome had to do at the Talent Show, they were delayed in producing our class and staff photos.  We are assured, though, that they will be ready and on sale from Lydia from today.  So order your copies now.

Year 6 Art Gallery

Wednesday 19th May 4:30p.m. – 6:30p.m. in the Year 6 classrooms.  Artwork produced by the children will be on display and some pieces will be auctioned off to raise money for Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary.  There will also be performances of Poetry and Music.  Refreshements will be available.

The Year 6 production of Julius Caesar will take place on Tuesday 8th June 7:30p.m. on  the small field.

Waterpolo

Well done Impala!  -  The Year 6 waterpolo league ended last week with Impala being declared champions after beating their closest challenges Ssesse by 7 goals to 5.  Cezar (4), Martin, Ntale and Celine were the goal scorers for Impala while Yann, Vince, Nathaniel (2) and John (1) replied for Ssesse.  In the other game between Kyoga and Rwenzori, Kyoga was awarded 2 goals and 3 points without breaking a sweat.   Unfortunately for the second week running one of the houses (Rwenzori) failed to meet the minimum number of players required to play.  The final table standing is as follows: -
Impala 1st – 60pts, Ssesse 2nd - 45pts, Kyoga 3rd – 30pts & Rwenzori 4th – 15pts.
Top scorers
Paul Impala 8 goals – 4 housepoints, Cezar Impala 5 goals – 3 housepoints.  Impala earns an extra 7 housepoints to push their total to 67. Thanks to their two top scorers of the league.

Bake Sale

This Wednesday Year 2 will hold a cake sale in support of Nsambya babies home.  Cakes & cookies will be on sale during snack break (9:15 – 9:30).  Money raised will go towards the purchase of formula milk and food stuffs.

Use of basketball court

We would like to remind all students that only soft soled shoes should be worn on the basketball court.  Wearing hard soled school shoes will damage the surface.  Thank you.

Exam News

This week Year 9 students took Cambridge Checkpoint tests in English, Maths and Science. This is the first time we have taken this international exam at Rainbow. The papers will be sent to the UK for marking and the results will be issued to students before the end of term. Checkpoint replaces the SATs, which were previously used to test student achievement at the end of Key Stage 3, and will provide us with an objective assessment of our student’s achievement in comparison to those in other international schools.  Tomorrow the Cambridge IGCSE exams start and on Wednesday there are the first AS/A level papers.  We are going to be using the secondary school hall for these exams so there is no need for any other students to go up to that floor of the building.  All music lessons are relocating to Room 35 and drama lessons to room 27 and the common room for the rest of the term.

Year 9 Option Choices

Following on from Checkpoint and also from the Options Evening, Year 9 have been asked to make their provisional option choices. This is far from a final choice for them but by knowing the subjects they intend to choose at this stage, we can give them guidance where necessary and arrange the option blocks for their IGCSE courses next year. We will design the option blocks to try, as far as possible, to accommodate the individual choices of each student. In the meantime, we will be holding further briefings for the Year 9 students to ensure they understand better the course content and demands of each IGCSE subject, especially those, such as Sociology and Economics, that they have not studied at Key Stage 3. Mr. Toscano

Secondary Assembly

The main purpose of the assembly this week was to give our two Talent Show winning acts an opportunity to display their talents to the whole school. They didn’t have the same stage and lighting but nevertheless gave a fine and entertaining performance. Mr. Toscano also took the opportunity to once again remind students that mobile phones must not be brought to school at all. Under normal circumstances, an exception to this rule is made for Years 12 and 13, but during the Cambridge IGCSE and A Level written exams, which start on Tuesday, no student is allowed to have a mobile in school. Sadly, two students have been found to have ignored the many previous warnings given and both have had to face the consequences of their actions. The message is very clear; no mobiles in school and, if a student needs to make an important call, this can always be done through Lydia at Reception. Mr. Toscano

Friday football

On Friday the U15 team beat Arisha FC 4 -1 with goals from Cheikh (2), Michael Moeller and an own goal.  The staff followed that up with 2-0 win against the Soul Orchestra.  Charles, on his debut, and Moses scored the goals.

Housepoints Scoreboard

Rwenzori 19657pts, Impala 17648pts, Ssesse 18029pts & Kyoga 18323pts.

… and finally welcome to Ms Patricia Maat who is assisting in the primary PE department for the next month.
