Rainbow wins athletics in style.
The second KISU international school athletics meet ended pretty much the same as the first one a year ago with Rainbow more than 100 points clear at the top of the scoreboard when the final results were announced at around 2:00p.m. on Saturday, 15th May.  Like last year, it was a bright sunny day for the event that began around 9:00a.m.  We had many outstanding performers and everyone competed in typical Rainbow fashion, with a smile on their face.  A special mention should go to Harley Mataratse in 6S who picked up 5 red ribbons which is the equivalent of 5 gold medals in ‘Olympics language.’  Thank you to the primary PE staff and several supporters both teachers and parents, who help our children to excel. Final scores:
1st Rainbow    350 points
2nd Aga Khan    247 points
3rd KISU        193 points
4th ISU        136 points
5th Heritage      93 points
6th Ambrosoli      89 points

Why not learn Chinese?
Rainbow International School is privileged to offer a course on Chinese language and culture to all interested students this summer. This course is made possible by a recent partnership with AIESEC (www.aiesec.org <http://www.aiesec.org/>), the world's largest student-run organisation, which will source the tutors directly from the People's Republic of China.

The interactive lessons will be conducted starting on Monday, 28th June 2010 and concluding on Friday, 30th July 2010.  The courses will be held from 9:00am to 11:00a.m on Monday to Friday (10 hours per week).  The five-week course costs 250,000 UGX per student, inclusive of all lesson materials.

Students will not only learn communication skills in Mandarin Chinese, but will also learn about the Chinese way of life (food, music, beliefs, etc) and Chinese business culture.  In our quest to prepare students for global challenges, knowledge of Chinese language and culture is very important, so don't miss out on this opportunity.

A. Thomas (Chairperson)

Football round-up
Last Tuesday, 18th May, coach Hiller avoided the volcano cloud and flew in from the USA where he now lives for a 3 week visit.  He wasted no time in getting back to his favourite place; the middle of a football pitch, as he refereed our U12 boys match against ISU which we won 5-0 with goals from Ricardo, Vincent, Harley & Mark (2).  Before that the girls had won 4-0 with a hatrick from Emma and one goal from Hazel.  Meanwhile at ISU our U7 team won 4-1 with goals from Alexi (3) and Owen (1) and our U9 team lost 5-1 with Arran scoring.  The next day Hiller was on the pitch again, this time as a player as he played for the staff in a 1-1 draw with Matovu FC. Hiller actually scored a goal but it didn’t count because the referee wasn’t watching!  On Friday the staff needed a late own goal to earn a 2-2 draw at Wagagai (near Entebbe).  Robert scored our first goal.

Water Polo
The Year 4 water polo kicked off last week where Ssesse played against Kyoga on Tuesday.  However, Kyoga managed to only raise two players who could not play against a full team of Ssesse.  Therefore it was a walkover for Ssesse that made the final score: 2 for Ssesse and 0 for Kyoga.  On Wednesday it was Impala Vs Rwenzori and the final score was 1 for Impala and 2 for Rwenzori.  The goals were scored by the following people respectively.
Rwenzori: Pulang (1) & Joel (1)
Impala:    Jirreh   (1)

This week’s fixtures are as follows:
Tuesday          Ssesse     Vs   Rwenzori
Wednesday   Impala      Vs   Kyoga
Thursday          Ssesse      Vs   Impala
Friday          Rwenzori   Vs   Kyoga
All matches start at 1:00p.m.      Coach Max

Art Auction
Thank you to all parents who came to the Year 6 art auction last Wednesday.  Full details of the event including how much was raised for the Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary will be given next week.

Trips postponement
We had to take the decision to postpone two trips this week, the IGCSE hillwalking trip to Fort Portal and the joint Primary/Secondary rugby trip to Kenya.  In both cases the reasons were the same; a significant number of students who had committed themselves to go did not bring full payment by the deadline set.  A lot of the students involved were very disappointed but we are determined to re-organise both trips for next school year.  Refunds will of course be arranged. Mr. Toscano

Step – up Day
On Monday 31st May we will be holding the traditional “Step-up Day,” in which Year 6 students have an opportunity to experience a day in the Secondary School.  All Year 6 students will take part and be given a programme of lessons in each of the Year 7 subjects.  Towards the end of the day, at 2:20, there will be a meeting with parents that will include a short presentation, an introduction to some of the secondary staff and an opportunity to ask questions.   A letter of invitation will be sent to Year 6 parents this week.

Secondary questionnaire
Many thanks to the 44 parents who took the time and trouble to fill out our questionnaire.  We will send out a more detailed response at a later date, but some of your comments and feedback have already proved very useful in pointing out areas where we need to focus our attention. Mr. Toscano

Reminder of the eating areas
This message particularly goes to secondary school students:  Eating of lunch (both school lunch and packed lunch) should only take place in the designated eating areas and on the steps by the main field.  It should not happen around the reception area, the sheltered area at the front of school, in the changing rooms or classrooms.  Litter is once again becoming a major problem especially near the benches by the side of the big football pitch.  If this continues the benches will be removed.

Correction
Last week we accidentally thanked 9JG for providing pen portraits for the yearbook when it was actually 9VG so, thank you, 9VG.  However, this week we thank 9JG for being the only class in the whole school to submit merits.  It means the overall table reads:
Rwenzori     20181 points
Impala            18444 points
Ssesse        18570 points
Kyoga        18884 points

…. and finally.  Good luck to the Year 6 children who are doing their CIE tests this week.
