A very busy June coming up
Tomorrow we enter the final month of the school year as we reach 1st June and it is possibly the busiest month of the entire year.
On Wednesday, 2nd June, there is the Year 1 production of ‘The Goblins next door’ starting at 5:30p.m. on the small field. Tickets at 10,000/= for adults and 5000/= for children are on sale at reception. On Tuesday, 8th June the Year 6 production of Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar” will take place on the small field starting at 7:30p.m. Tickets are on sale at the reception. Prices are the same as for the Year 1 production; 10,000/= for adults and 5000/= for children. So friends, Romans and countrymen, come and enjoy some of Rome’s greatest times. The next day, Wednesday 9th June, we are hosting the Midland primary inter-schools swimming gala at the Rainbow Club with many of our children representing Rainbow. Three days later on Saturday, 12th June we have a very big day as our secondary school athletics squad travel to ISU to try to retain their trophy in the morning and we have the big Rainbow World Cup Food Fair at the Rainbow Club in the afternoon. On Monday, 14th June Year 6 and secondary school will have a special assembly on the main field as we officially say goodbye to our Year 13 students in a Leavers’ ceremony. The next day, Tuesday 15th June, the Year 6 students say farewell to primary school in their own way by having a 4 day trip to Fort Portal. Also on that day the Year 12 students commence their work experience. At the end of that week on Friday 18th June there is the Big Splash swimming gala for Early Years and Year 1. The final week of term is filled with special events and assemblies which we will talk about nearer the time but you can see how packed the month of June is and we have not even mentioned the word exams or the two barbecues and special end of year outing for the boarders.
EKISAAKAATE INTERNATIONAL, JULY 2010 BACKGROUND - ‘Ekisaakaate’ is an enclosure, that traditionally fenced a homestead of Kabaka’s (King of Buganda) chiefs (Abaami ba Kabaka) and other high ranking personalities in society in Buganda, where good values, discipline and cultures were developed. Inside the “Ekisaakaate” young Baganda children were taken for cultural grooming and they acquired leadership, moral and other social skills, knowledge on cultural practice and values, as well as occupational skills.
Her Royal Highness the Nnabagereka (Queen) Sylvia Nagginda realised that there is a great need to salvage cultural values and beliefs and to restore a ‘holistic’ generation in our society, following the moral decadence in society. The Nnabagereka (Queen of Buganda) through Nnabagereka Development Foundation whose Mission is ‘To contribute to the promotion of socio-economic development, through support to education and health initiatives, community empowerment and promotion of good cultural values and practices’, developed a concept of the Ekisaakaate. The ‘Ekisaakaate’ programme aims at nurturing young girls and boys into ‘holistic’ persons, social managers and leaders who appreciate and harmonise both traditional and modern values. On 10th January 2007 the first ‘Ekisaakaate’ was held at St Agnes Catholic Girls Boarding Primary School, Naggalama with a pioneer record number of 300 children followed by the biggest turn-up of close to 800 at Mbogo Mixed Secondary School in 2008. It has since run annually for four consecutive years. In the midst of all this, Her Royal Highness the Nnabagereka is answering to the numerous requests and pleas from parents and children in international schools and the Diaspora, by organising Ekisaakaate International Version slated for July 25th to August 3rd 2010. The cost of the 10 day retreat at Vienna College is $150 or the equivalent. Reception visit to Lweza Gardens It was a great trip and children saw a lot of minibeasts around using magnifying glasses. The place is very beautiful and has good space for children to run around. Thereafter they had a picnic in the gardens. Mrs. Odokonyero.
Kindergarten visits the Zoo On the 18th May 2010, Kindergarten L took a field trip to the zoo to look at the animals today and compare them with the dinosaurs that lived many years ago. We discovered that the rhino looked so much like the Triceratops, the giraffe like the Diploducus and the monitor lizard like the Iguanodon. We also thought that the camel looked like the Brontosaurus. It was great fun as the children rode bravely on the camel’s back. And this time, even though the monkeys came after us, we were not scared but rather thought it was funny!!
Opposites day Friday the 4th is opposite’s day in kindergarten L. Everything shall be opposites. The way we wear our shoes, tables will be turned upside down. Everything will be topsy-turvy. You are welcome to drop in and join in the fun.
‘Step up’ day
Today in secondary school you will find around 50 new children. They will be easily identifiable as they have a different uniform. They are coming from Year 6 for the day to sample life and lessons in secondary school. I am sure they will have a good day and will be well looked after by the pupils and teachers of secondary school.
Water Polo The Year 4 water polo tournament ended last week. There was a lack of commitment by the players of certain teams and that led to just one mixed game being played on Friday last week. However, house points were awarded to committed players that took part in the Friday game last week. There were two teams, team A Vs team B. Team A had 7 goals and team B had 3 goals. The goals were scored by the following people:
Team A Team B Francis (1) Jirreh (2) Ahmed (2) Sumaya (1) Joel (4) House points will be given to the class teachers of those committed players that took part in the waterpolo tournament. Well done. Coach Max Photo News Year 3 production pictures are on sale. To make orders, please go to any of the Year 3 teachers and view the album for the picture reference numbers you want. A picture costs 1,000/=. Some pictures are on the Year 3 board. The closing date for ordering your class photos is Friday, 18th June. Don’t forget we still desperately need photos of Rainbow Day and the Primary School Swimming galas and EAMUN for the yearbook.
Year 8 look forward to World Cup In Thursday’s assembly we had almost as many people on stage as were in the audience as the whole of Year 8 gave us their own build up to the FIFA World Cup starting on 11th June in South Africa. It was a varied and colourful assembly. Thank you to the students and teachers involved. And in Primary School, on Thursday Reception O performed a lovely story about the butterflies that tried to feed their minibeast friend their own food – delicious nectar, but found the other minibeats could not eat it. The play was followed by a jaunty song.
Music filled the air on Friday for the multi-year group music assembly. There was a lively mix of musical styles from groups as well as individual pieces. Thank you for these very enjoyable assemblies.
Staff football On Friday the staff football team played at home to The People Concern Project and won 4-2. The Rainbow goals came from Noah, Paul Oboloko, Mr. Urquhart and Hiller. That’s now just one defeat in 16 matches!
Correction to Chinese Lessons Please note the error made in last week’s Weekly Rainbow; the Chinese lessons are for 2 hours per day not 14! i.e. from 9:00a.m. until 11:00am (not pm). Also, it should be pointed out that the lessons are for adults as well as children so, parents, why not sign up!
Welcome and goodbye Welcome back to Mrs. Jayne Ngyema, the primary school EAL teacher following her maternity leave and goodbye and thank you to Patricia Maat, the voluntary primary school PE assistant who is returning to Holland.
Litter and Cutlery We are once again having serious problems with litter left around the eating areas and steps and with students not returning plates and cutlery. Please be considerate to the Rainbow Community and tidy up after eating. Thank you.
