Don’t miss the PSA International Food Fair Thank you to everyone who attended the PSA’s Car Boot sale in whatever capacity you came. There was plenty of buying as well as selling and everyone seemed happy with the morning in spite of the heat. After various overheads being taken out we raised 535,000/= from the morning’s effort. Thank to the Student Board for gallantly washing cars. I think they had the coolest job! We now urge all parents to get involved with the children to bring about a successful International Food Fair. A letter went out on Friday to all secondary students informing all parents of what we are trying to do. Basically we are asking you to donate a national dish for a national stand that you can organise for the Fair. If you and your children can get together with your fellow nationals and organise a food stall for your nation, dress it up and yourselves for the occasion and sell the food you have made, then we could be in for a very good feast as well as raising a considerable amount money. Please consider the various ways you can join in the effort listed in the letter and tell us on the Response Form what you can do and return that slip to either Lydia or Myf at Reception. Register your country’s food stall with Myf so that we can provide you with a table and plastic plates etc. In primary school please inform your class’ CPR of what you can donate and what nation’s stall you wish to provide for. Let’s keep the trophy Also on Saturday we send our senior athletics team to ISU for the annual secondary schools athletics championship. The trophy for this event has almost become Rainbow’s personal property over the years but there is no room for complacency. Keep training hard and make sure you are in peak condition come Saturday morning. The event should be over just in time to rush back for the IFF! 2 competitors who will certainly be representing Rainbow at ISU on Saturday are Vincent Green and Gabriele Ejikeme who both performed very well at the same venue on 22nd May in World Athletics Day. Vincent beat six 13 & 14 year olds to come second in the U15 1500m. At 11 years old he was by far the youngest and smallest in the race. Meanwhile Gabriele achieved 2 personal bests in winning the 100metres in 11:58sec and the 200 metres in 24:58sec. Well done to Vincent and Gabriele. This Wednesday, 9th June is Heroes Day. It’s a holiday for most of us but not our swimmers who will be taking part in the Midland Gala from 8:00a.m. to 1:30p.m. This event is for 12 years old and under and is designed to encourage Ugandan primary schools to participate in swimming. Apart from Rainbow as hosts, we have Lohan Academy, Bethel School, Africa Academy and Hillside, Nalia competiting. There maybe one or two other late entries. Supporters are very welcome. Thank you to all who supported the Year 6 art gallery. If all the pledges come in for the sale of art we will raise 478,250/= for Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary. Details of money raised: While the Year 11, 12 & 13 will breathe a big sigh of relief this week as the Cambridge exams draw to a close on Friday, the Year 10s are about to begin their end of year exams. Timetables were sent home on Friday and exams being on Thursday. Year 7, 8 and 9 will start their exams the following week. On Wednesday, Year 1 presented the very amusing story of the Goblins Next Door. It is a tale of some highly mischievous and cheeky goblins that cause all sorts of trouble when they move into the neighbourhood. The children acted with confidence and an obvious enjoyment. This very funny play was made funnier by a couple of seeming ad-libs along the way. Thank you Year 1 children and teachers. Tomorrow evening Year 6 will present Julius Caesar. Tickets are available from reception and the performance begins at 7:30p.m. The ticket price includes a drink and snack. Please hand your ticket in to claim your refreshments. Last Friday (4th) 28 children took ABRSM grade exams. Usually the exams are conducted at Kampala Music School but, for the first time, the examiner agreed to examine the children at school due to the high number of children pursuing grading. The children were taking exams from preliminary to grade 3 levels with two children taking exams in two instruments (Zozianne 5B and Cynthia 6S). The examiner, as with Lamda exams, flew in from the UK specifically for the exams and the children practised hard to ensure they were able to do their best. As well as judging their skill in playing their instruments, the grading includes answering theory questions. Well done, children! Excelling in any area takes practice and perseverance. Developing these life skills is just as valuable as the pleasure of playing your instrument. How I enjoyed my day in reception class on Friday. The children had been learning about different countries and I was invited to teach them something about Jamaica. We all joined in to make coconut and ginger cakes and still had a little time to share a song and story. Recently I have been so buried in administrative tasks that I had almost begun to suffer from sunlight deprivation! And I was certainly missing out on the liveliness of classroom life, so it was refreshing to be in early years. I hope the cakes were tasty! Mrs. Dralega The Year 5 teams found the words too easy when the opening game of ‘Call my Bluff’ took place on 24th May – steaming through to a tie-breaker in which Kyoga emerged the champions. The other three teams tied in second place. In contrast, the Year 4 words were extremely hard and all teams found it difficult when they played last Monday. In first place was Ssesse, earning 5 house points each, second was a tie between Rwenzori & Kyoga (3 points each). Impala in fourth place get 2 house points each. Well done all participants in what was a very tough competition! Mrs. Dralega On Friday 4th June, a very excited 3V visited the Quality Nursery and Primary School to donate books. Quality school welcomed us with a song followed by a poem. We had an interactive reading session with the students of Quality School, and came back having made new friends. Mrs. Vashisht 3V On behalf of the babies and children in Nsambya we do acknowledge and appreciate the love and care you have shown to us through the various items that were brought to the Home on Monday 31st May, we are very lucky to have you as our friends and to know that out there students in Year 2 do think about us. Please thank your parents, guardians and your teachers on our behalf. May the Almighty God bless you and keep you safe. There was great enthusiasm for the first friendly rugby game against ISU on Tuesday 1st June played here at Rainbow. ISU won 15 – 5 (3 tries to 1). Our under 11 team soon discovered they were playing against children a lot older than themselves but this did not matter as they excelled in their strength and speed. However, at ISU’s request, we played tag rugby which is quite a different game from the full 10-a-side contact game our children are used to playing. With 15 reserves we fielded new children almost every quarter whilst ISU kept the same players who managed to develop their game throughout and their more effective use of space and passing led to their success. However, it was a fun event that was enjoyed by all. The match was competently refereed by Mr. Colley who will be the new secondary school PE teacher next academic year. A big thank you goes to PSA for funding yet another set of lockers to complete Key Stage 3. Key Stage 4 should watch the space next academic year. However, we request the students to respect what has been given, not to sit on them. Also not to forget the teamwork exhibited during the car boot sale where we managed to raise 30,000/=. Thank you again PSA. Student Board We would like to thank everyone who bought an issue of the Zone 2 weeks ago. Thank you very much for supporting our school newspaper! We really appreciate it. We have received plenty of positive feedback from this issue. Most people generally agree that it was better than the first issue. Special congratulations go to Renee & Tema (Year 12) for winning the games zone competition by completing the world’s first ever crossword puzzle. They won 10,000/=! We are still accepting entries for the Diary of Anonymous Rainbow student to guess who the student is. Special thanks go to Leanne and Suleiman for helping with the distribution of ‘The Zone’. The Zone is officially sold out! This is our last issue of this school year and once again best of luck to Gayathry (Editor in Chief) and the rest of the team who will continue producing bigger and better issues of ‘The Zone’. Mugabi This week’s Artwork of the week is by TOMOICHI ISHIURA 10JM for his colourful comic book illustration. Well done, Tomoichi. Mr. Ufoyuru On Tuesday a group of 30 students from Stena Hill will be visiting Rainbow to take part in a school linking workshop with Year 9 students. They will take part in lessons and a question and answer session before finishing up with a Basketball match between the two schools. Those year 9s who wish to play, remember to bring your PE kit. Thank you to 7WM for being the only class in the school to submit merits or housepoints. It made such little difference to the overall scores that we will add them in next week for the final scoreboard before the overall winners are announced on the last day of term. On Friday the staff had a comfortable 5-0 win against the Kabalagala Mechanics with goals from Coach Paul (2), Mr. Urquhart (2) and Sunday. |
