Leavers’ Ceremony today

This afternoon Rainbow International School will be holding its 12th Leavers’ Ceremony.  As a departure from previous years, the guest of honour this year is a former student.  Mark Karamira was part of this ceremony when he completed Year 13 in 2005.  He has since embarked on various interesting ventures which I am sure he will tell us about this afternoon as well as giving a message to the 19 Year 13 students who are officially leaving Rainbow today.  Lunch break will be as normal and then, when the second bell rings at 1:40p.m, all secondary school students should make their way to the steps ready for the ceremony to begin.  The Year 6 children should also come for the ceremony at 1:45p.m.

Rainbow wins Midland Gala

On Heroes Day last Wednesday the sun shone all morning for a wonderful inter schools swimming gala sponsored by The Midland Group of Companies and hosted by Rainbow International School at The Rainbow Club.  The purpose of the event is to encourage the participation of the Ugandan schools in this very enjoyable sport and important life skill.  It was good to see 5 local schools attending and, although Rainbow generally dominated the competition, it was clear that there is considerable swimming talent within the country.  The Uganda Swimming Federation were very visible on the day but there is no doubt that the expertise and experience of Noah, Max and their team were the main reason that the event ran so smoothly and finished a full hour ahead of schedule allowing everyone to go home early to enjoy the remainder of their day off.  Here’s a summary of all the results: -

6 and Under
1st Rainbow A (74), 2nd Greenhill (67), 3rd Rainbow B (55)

8 and Under
1st Hillside (147), 2nd Rainbow (136), 3rd Greenhill (124)

10 and Under
1st Rainbow A (158), 2nd Hillside (121), 3rd Greenhill (119)

12 and Under
1st Rainbow A (191), 2nd Greenhill (169), 3rd Rainbow B (149)

Overall Scoreboard
Winners:    Rainbow A (577)
2nd Greenhill (491), 3rd Hillside (479), 4th Rainbow B (386), 5th Pearl Africa (374), 6th Lohana (298) & 7th Bethel (121).

A great Sports Assembly

Fittingly, given that the biggest sporting occasion ever to be held on African soil kicked off on the same day, Key Stage 2 held a sports themed assembly by the swimming pool last Friday morning.  Apart from celebrating our recent successes in the KISU athletics meet and the Midland Swimming gala, we also congratulated 4 of our primary school Tae kwon do students, Kunal 5B, David 3SV, Tristan 3SV and Siddarth 3MK who recently performed at the first East African International Schools Tae kwan do championships held at KISU winning gold and silver medals and a big trophy for Rainbow for coming second overall.  Mr. Green gave a taster of the football festival in South Africa with some World Cup trivia and the whole assembly began with a demonstration of how accidents can happened near swimming pools and a few golden rules of what to do and not to do if you see someone in difficulty in the water.  To top off everything 5B gave us a dance routine on the steps.  Wonderful.
Nursery and Kindergarten started the day with a smile in Thursday’s assembly.  Nursery sang songs about colours.  They are the youngest children in school, but they smiled and bopped their way through their presentation with confidence and an obvious enjoyment.  Kindergarten both acted a story and sang about Dinosaurs.  This had been their topic for this term and they managed to remember all those long and complicated dinosaur names.  Thank you both classes!

Julius Caesar

Year 6 excelled in their performance of Julius Caesar on Tuesday evening.  From the music to scenery, stage management and the acting – everything was well thought through and fabulously presented.  This was their farewell to primary performance and we wish them well as they move on to the next very important step in their education. Mrs. Dralega

Secondary Assembly

On Thursday, 9JG did some short sketches to highlight the issue of street children and educated the audience on how so many children have found themselves living on the streets of Kampala. Mr. Toscano

Options Forms

Year 9 have been given forms on which to make their final option choices for IGCSE subjects in Year 10.  This should be returned as soon as possible and by no later than the end of term.

Football Fixture

Tomorrow, we will play our final football fixture of the year away to Ambrosoli.  It’s U11 boys but, given that our Year 6 boys will be heading to Fort Portal, we will use Year 5 boys with some Year 4s.  Good luck, boys.

Football result

The staff team continued their remarkable form last Thursday when they won their fourth game in a row by winning 2-0 at Kids of Africa in Entebbe.  Hiller, took a diversion from his journey to the airport to fly to the USA and played his 6th game in his 3 week visit.  He missed an open goal but still made a big contribution to the victory achieved through a penalty from Robert and another goal from Coach Paul.  On Monday, in Hiller’s ‘first’ farewell game, we played his former team Blackboys FC and came back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 with two goals from Robert and one from Mr. Urquhart.

Boarding House Review of the Year

It’s been a very eventful year for most of us, and we think it’s safe to say that time has definitely flown by.  Everything this year has been an experiment with the new boarding house staff and the style of living.  One thing has not changed – we still know how to have a good time.  From our public holiday barbeques to the boarding disco and finally to the end of year leavers’ lunch at Spur.  On behalf of the staff and students in the boarding house, we wish the Year 13 leavers’, Amanda, John, Linda and Nicholas good luck in your next chapter of life and to the Year 11s Maureen, Jackie, Isabella, Mabok, Oyiti and Areng, we hope to see you next year in yellow shirts!  Barbara & Leanne

I would like to say how much I enjoyed my day out with the boarders last Saturday.  Normally we go somewhere quite exclusive a long way away from any potential interference.  For a change this year we went right to the heart of the city with a session of bowling at Alleygators followed by a meal at Spur.  Gate crashers from the day student fraternity proved the only irritation to a day full of laughter and celebration.  Much of the laughter came at the bowling alley with the youngest competitor, Clair Green, managing a strike with her first bowl and Emmanuel Nyeko achieving the dubious title of Most Dangerous Player when he managed to bounce his ball into the spectators armchairs!  Fortunately there were no spectators watching at the time.  Helped by an impressive debut score of 87 from Miss Angela it was Oyiti’s team that won the overall competition and took all the chocolates.  The staff at Spur did a magnificent job serving nearly 80 people from the a la carte menu and then presenting the cake to say goodbye to our 10 departing boarders who also received a gift each.  From the youngest, Thandi, to the oldest, Olvanus, the boarders showed great teamwork and exemplary behaviour throughout.   Well done. Mr. Green

Exams this week

Year 10 exams began last week and will continue throughout this week.  Year 7, 8 & 9 join them later this week and, of course, Lamda exams take place throughout the week.  Please make sure you are in the right place at the right time and well prepared in every way to maximise your chances of success.

Artwork of the Week

This week’s Artwork of the week is by AMANI NASSOUR, KATRINA MUGUME, CECELIA ATAGBEHUNU and THARINDU DE ALWIS all in 9K for their wonderful paintings using watercolour paint.  Well done, all of you. Mr. Ufoyuru

Rugby Club

As the year comes to an end, we have to say a great thank you to all students who participated in the rugby club this year.  We shall end it in style with a Year 5/6 Vs Year 7 rugby 10 a side match on Tuesday 22nd June at 1:00 – 1:25p.m on the main field.  This shall be the return leg of the earlier game which primary narrowly won earlier.  The referee will be our Secondary Head Mr. Toscano.  All are invited to cheer their team on this day. Mr. Mbungu & Mrs. Volrath.

Stena Hill Visit

Thank you to all Year 9 students who took part in the school-linking workshop with Stena Hill on Tuesday.  Unfortunately we could not quite beat them at basketball… but there is always next year!

The Big Splash

This Friday morning we have the early years and Key Stage 1 swimming gala, the big splash.  Parents, make sure you find room in your diary to come and support your children in this fun event.

Year 4 cake sale

Also on Friday Year 4 are holding a cake sale at break time outside the Year 4 classrooms to raise money for their chosen charity.

Visit to Christ the King Nursery and Primary School.

On 10th June, a very excited 4S visited Christ the King nursery and primary school to donate books that were collected during book week.  We were welcomed with a song.  We had a reading session with the Christ the King students which was fun and got a chance to tour the school.  The best bit of it was we came back having made new friends. Miss Sebunya.

Year 12s go to work

Tomorrow the Year 12 students will be heading off to various parts of the city to start 9 days of work experience.  This is an essential part of the 6th form course that helps prepare students for the new set of skills and discipline that are required once they leave academia.  Good luck to all of you.  We are sure you will not let yourself or Rainbow down.
