Rainbow win athletics again

On a glorious sunny morning at ISU last Saturday, 12th June, it became almost a procession of first places for Rainbow especially in the concluding relays in which we had a 100% winning record.  So, once again, Rainbow brought home the cup that we have held in our trophy cabinet for 6 of the past 7 years.  Well done to all our athletes and to the PE staff for ensuring we finished off our sporting year in style.  Final results:
Rainbow     1153 points,       KISU    1013 points,          ISU      776 points

The International Food Fair.

This event was a trermendous success, not financially, but from the point of view of bringing people in and parent participation.   We had tables representing Netherlands, Belgium,  Serbia, Uganda, Cameroon and Senegal, China, Ghana, USA, Australia, UK and India and the boarding students had one of the most financially successful stalls representing Argentina.  The prize winners of the day were Ghana for the best-dressed people (Mr. and Mrs. Gallagher) ; India for the most popular stall (too many people to mention!) and Serbia for the best-presented stall (Mrs. Kostic and daughter, Jana) Luke Gallagher and Hannah Campbell won the drawing competition and Sula (Mrs. Kotecha's driver) won the wonderful food hamper.   Meanwhile Mr. Green gave away lots of prizes with his World Cup trivia quiz and raised more money for the PSA with his predictions competition.  It was a memorable day with families having fun and one that could be repeated next year by the next committee.   Thanks again to all those stallholders who volunteered the food and their time. Anne Thomas Chairperson of the PSA 2009/10

LAMDA

LAMDA Examinations are now completed at Rainbow.  The Examiner, Miss Norma Redfearn  was very impressed with the school and all the students and thoroughly enjoyed her three days examining here.
The LAMDA certificates, results and reports will be sent through to us from London in September.  This is due to Q.C.A (Qualification & Curriculum Authority, U.K) rules for this International examination. If your child is changing schools please send us the correct address so that we may forward them on to you when we have received them.  email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Thank you and Well Done, Rainbow!  Mrs. Porter

Non-uniform day

It is some time since we had a non-uniform day.  That is to be corrected this Wednesday when the whole school has the opportunity to come to school in ‘Spots & Stripes’ at a minimum cost of 1000/=.  Money raised will go to various causes.  The Student Board are to have a special meeting at lunchtime today in the common room to decide what the secondary school money raised is to go towards.  Wednesday will also be the day for class parties in primary school.

Leavers’ Ceremony

Thank you to former student Mark Karamira who attended Rainbow from 2000 (Year 9) to 2005 (Year 13) as he came back on Monday to make all his former teachers so proud with an articulate, sincere and inspirational speech at the Leavers’ Ceremony on Monday.  Well done also to all the teachers, grounds staff, caterers, Fred for the sound system and to the students who performed in the beautiful ceremony.

Goodbye and best wishes

As always at the end of the year we are saying goodbye to a number of pupils and staff.  To all pupils who are leaving, we say best wishes and good luck in your new school wherever you might be.  For all our teachers who are leaving the message is much the same as well as thank you for your contribution to Rainbow no matter how long or short your stay with us was.  Some of the longer serving members of staff who are leaving will be recognised specially in the end of year assembly on Thursday.

Youth Camp (Ekisaakaate at Vienna College)

On Thursday secondary school and Years 5 & 6 had a presentation from the PRO Kisaakaate Susan Nalwoga telling us about a summer youth camp.  Those students intending to participate in the Youth Camp (Ekisaakaate) scheduled from 27th July to 3rd August 2010, please contact either Mrs. Walugembe, Mrs. Green or Rispa Hatibu (Year 10) for registration forms.  “Ekisaakaate” is under patronage of her Royal Highness, the Queen of Buganda (Lady Nnabagereka Sylvia Nagginda).  She will be officially launching the “Ekisaakaate” for international students on Thursday at the Rainbow Club starting at 5:00p.m.

White Water Rafting

A big thank you to all students who took part in last week’s white-water rafting expedition in Jinja.  As well as being brave enough to take part, their behaviour was superb and they were an absolute credit to the school.    They all came back to Kampala sore, tired and soaked to the skin but would recommend it to anyone else.  Roll on next year!  Mr. Fugill

Rain fails to wash out the big splash

A blanket of cloud settled over Kampala on Friday morning depositing a steady drizzle on our school.  For the benefit of the spectators as much as the participants, the Big Splash was moved to the afternoon.  It proved to be an inspired move as the early years and Year 1 children had a great conclusion to the week demonstrating their water skills ranging from making a merry-go-round in the small pool to picking up sinking objects to swimming a width of the big pool unaided.  Every single one of them made a very big splash before collecting their medals and going home for a long rest.  Thanks to the primary swimming and PE department for another lovely event.

Learning support trip

This year the learning support department registered its largest number of IGCSE students!  This is an incredible achievement for our year 11 learning support students.  Our trip to Entebbe was to bid them farewell, wish them the best of luck as they step into the World, and for us to get together for some fun and great learning!  We had a smooth ride to Entebbe and immediately began the educational tour to learn about Uganda’s magnificent wildlife!  Our highly experienced and knowledgeable tour guide, Mr. Kakeeto, gave us the privilege of touring the park and learning about the amazing variety of animals in Uganda.  Many animals had been rescued, like the crocodile (which had previously killed five people), or gifted to Uganda, like the white rhinos: Sherino and Kabira from Kenya, or brought from National Parks, like the giraffes from Kidepo National Park.  Did you know that Uganda is one of the countries with the largest variety of bird species in the world?

To carry on with one of this term’s assemblies, we were excited to see the mighty and graceful Rock Python with its other mates: Egyptian Cobra and Gabon Vipers.  Our special tour ended with our relative: the Chimps!  Sharing lunch by the shores of Lake Victoria, along a white sand beach, was extremely memorable, culminating in a special ceremony, when Learning Support teachers awarded our Year 11 students with certificates of achievement!! Message from Student Board

This is to congratulate everyone for having come through 2009/2010 academic year.  A big thank you to the student body, teachers, administration and parents for working together for the good of the Rainbow community.  We wish you a lovely summer holiday.  See you next academic year 2010/2011.

So many Primary School trips!

Last week 3 different primary school classes went on educational trips.  This followed Year 1 going to Kajjansi air strip and Entebbe sailing club on Friday, 11th June.

Year 3 trip – On 17th June, Year 3 went to the Bulange Tourism Centre and Uganda Museum.  This term Year 3 has been learning about the customs and culture of the tribes of Uganda.  It was an enriching experience for the children as they were shown around the Buganda Government Parliament, The Royal Mile, The Mengo Palace and the Uganda Museum.  There was some disappointment as the audience with the Nnabagereka of Buganda could not be arranged but getting first hand knowledge of the history of Buganda was very exciting.
Mrs. Vashisht

Year 5 trip - The Year 5 trip to Namagongo Shrine on Tuesday 8th June was part of the History study of Uganda in the pre-colonial era and the effects of foreign influence in Buganda.   The children enjoyed a day out especially as it is now the end of the year.

On Friday Year 2 went to the same place as a follow up to their topic of places of worship.  Children were able see the inside of the church, and identify the different places such as the altar, pulpit and know what they are used for.  They also saw the cross, the Christians’ symbol, and the Bible, the Christians’ holy book.  Children were able to practise behaving appropriately in a place of worship.

Meanwhile most of Year 6 plus Mrs. Ssemakula, Mr. Weller, Mr. Oboth & Mr. Urquhart travelled to Fort Portal on Tuesday and returned on Saturday afternoon having had 5 exciting days of hiking in the lower Rwenzoris, visiting Lake Nkuruba Nature Reserve and visiting the Kihingami Wetlands and tea factory.

Soccer News

Ambrosoli 5        Rainbow 3
We lost our last fixture of the year away to Ambrosoli 3-5.  Playing with only one 11 year old in an U12 game, because most of Year 6 were away we were dominated by the hosts throughout the game but we also had some good spells.  Our goals were scored by Riccardo, Joey and a powerful header from Tendo.  Well done, boys.

Year 5 V Year 6.  Today we will have a Year 5 V Year 6 challenge 7-a-side match at lunch time play break starting at 1:00p.m.  Girls will play the first half (10 minutes) while boys will play the second half (10 minutes) and don’t forget there are two big challenge matches to look forward to on Thursday morning as well.  On Friday our senior boys team and staff team warmed up for the Matthams Cup with matches against Stena Hill.  A goal from Nemanja gave the boys a 1-1 draw against their senior boys team while a hattrick from Coach Paul, two from Robert and one from Noah gave our staff a 6 – 2 win against their staff team.

Chinese lessons still on

We have 3 people signed up for the Chinese classes starting next week at Rainbow.   AIESEC are willing to run the classes with such a small number.  Obviously they would like more ‘students’, though so please pay 250,000/= in the accounts office this week if you wish to learn about the Chinese language and culture for 5 weeks.  Remember this course is open to adults and children.

More donations to Kindergarten

Kindergarten would like to thank Mrs. Ruth Hyde for her generous donation of soft toys, puppets, playdough cutters and 2 large tubs.  Thank you very much.

Artwork of the Week

First of all we would like to thank all the art students in secondary school who have continued to produce some excellent work throughout this academic year.  However, special mention must go to all those students whose work was chosen as Artwork of the week.  And for all your effort you will receive a certificate of recognition.  Once again, thank you.Mr. Ufoyuru & Mr. Mujunga

Year 12 work experience

On Thursday I visited about half of our Year 12 students at various work places around the city.  In most cases I was very impressed with the performance of our students as were their supervisors.  One of the students gave me a detailed guided tour of Britania factory whilst another is single handedly running the reception at KPMG!  This week Mrs. Bisasso and Mr. Fugill will be visiting the rest of the students. Mr. Green

… and finally, there were very few housepoints submitted last week so we will collect two weeks of housepoints together for the final scoreboard on Thursday.
