Welcome back to an enlarged Rainbow!

Rainbow International School is the largest it has ever been.  As far as the buildings are concerned we had a massive extension during the holiday when a hall was built on top of the new science block in secondary school. This should ease many of our problems of space when it comes to exams, parent teacher consultations and maybe even productions.  There have been several other improvements around the school, notably extra safety railings, covered walkways, tiered stone pitching at the side of the big field, tiling throughout the school and plenty of new furniture.  The relocation of the Principal to an office next to the library has necessitated the building of a new library storeroom.  Perhaps the most significant development during this holiday was the refurbishment and upgrade of the secondary school IT lab.  In terms of population the school has mushroomed over the past decade and we now have around 850 pupils on roll.  We have many new pupils this term and primary school is virtually full with spaces in just Year 1 and Year 5.  It requires many teachers to teach all these children and we have several new members of staff to tell you about: -

In Primary School we have 6 new teachers
Miss Laura Vivash        French teacher
Miss Stephanie Wiggins         Learning Support Coordinator
Mr. Daniel Smith        Head of PE

We also welcome back Mrs. Josephine Keronga (formally Miss Muhaya) as teacher of Year 4 and Mrs. Tamilla Wamatere as teaching assistant in
Year 1.

In Secondary School we have 5 new teachers
Mrs. Madhuchhanda Banerji    Biology & Year 8 class teacher
Mr. Thomas Colley        Head of PE
Mrs. Coryn Kissling        Chemistry teacher
Ms Rachel Sloan        Mathematics teacher
Mr. Andrew Spraggon        Learning Support teacher

Several of the existing staff are taking on new roles as follows: -
In primary school: -
Deirdre Mukweri        Key Stage 1 Coordinator
Prim Mugisha        Year 1 Class teacher
Deborah Mbuga        Head of SEN

Cambridge Exam results

A great many of our students in Years 11, 12 and 13 deserve to be congratulated this year on their outstanding performance in the Cambridge exams at IGCSE, AS and A level.

At IGCSE, 26% of grades were A* or A, 70% were C or above and the overall pass rate was 96%.   At AS level, 27% of the grades were As and the overall pass rate at A and AS level was 94%.  We hope that these encouraging results will inspire students and their teachers to aim even higher this coming year.  A detailed breakdown of the results and more information on outstanding individual performances can be seen on the noticeboard outside the school reception.  The original statements have now been received from Cambridge and are available for collection.  Meanwhile our first cohort of Checkpoint students in Year 9 did very well with a school average above the world average in all three subjects.

In Year 6 the CIE achievement test results were excellent with 49% achieving the top grades in English, 56% achieving the top grades in Mathematics and 65% achieving the top in Science.

Congratulations!

As usual there was a lot of exciting news concerning members of the Rainbow Community during the holiday.  There were 3 Rainbow weddings:

2 special football tournaments this week

Starting Wednesday lunchtime we will be holding the annual Noel Mugume shootout competition.  It is an interhouse competition.  There are no house captains as yet so year groups will have to organise their teams amongst themselves.  Maybe potential house captains will emerge as a result.  Each house should provide 5 shooters for each year group including at least one girl and a goalkeeper (who is also a shooter).  The dates of the competition are as follows:

1st Sept: Yr 7    7th Sept: Yr 11
2nd Sept: Yr 8    8th Sept: 6th Form
3rd Sept: Yr 9    9th Sept: Staff
6th Sept: Yr 10
All scores will be accumulated to work out the winner of the Noel Mugume plate.  In the middle of this competition on 4th September, we are holding another annual event in memory of someone who died extremely prematurely.  The Bebeto tournament for U14 age group will take place from 9:00a.m.
this Saturday culminating in the staff playing the Blackboys for the Bebeto Cup.  With that in mind there will be a trial for U14 boys this Thursday, 2nd September, after school.  Anyone wishing to attend must collect a letter from the PE office by Wednesday morning as school transport will not be available after the trial.

NOTE: Other soccer trials as follows:
U12 – Tuesday 7th September
15 and over - Thursday 9th September
Late buses start the following week so make sure you collect a letter to attend these two sessions.

PSA News

There will be a meeting for all PSA members on 14th September to discuss arrangements for the Annual General Meeting to be held on 30th September.  All executive members are requested to attend this important meeting. PSA Secretary – Mr. Musau

LAMDA News

All RISU students have passed their LAMDA examinations for the eighth year running.  A brilliant effort, well done to you all.  Reports and certificates will be given out at school soon.  All students are required to fill out a registration slip to join this term’s classes.   These will be issued to each primary student and are available at reception for senior students who wish to join or continue their LAMDA classes.  Lessons commence on Monday the 13th and Thursday 16th September 2010. Mrs. Porter

Well done Coach Mildred

Rainbow is very proud to announce that its secondary school PE assistant, Mildred Gamba, is to represent Uganda in the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in October.  We wish her great success.

Swimming

There are several swimming galas due this term.  However, there is serious swimming this term as well.  In 6 weeks time there will be the Primary Inter-house Swimming gala.  Therefore, much effort is required during swimming lessons.   Lunch time swimming starts on Tuesday, tomorrow at 12:50.  Please note: Only after having eaten your lunch.  Secondary will go to the swimming pool at 1:15p.m.  Thank you. Coach Max.

Lockers

Amidst all the activities at the end of last term, we failed to collect in the secondary school locker keys.  For security reasons it is essential that all these keys are returned before we issue the lockers out again.  We now have sufficient lockers for the whole of key stage 3 and maybe even one Year 10 class.  So all the Year 8 and 9 students who have a locker key, please return them to your class teacher immediately.

Primary School News

Welcome to all new families who have joined Rainbow this week.  It’s good to have you with us and hope you settle in quickly and have an enjoyable start to the year.  Next week all primary parents will be invited to meetings in which the teachers will talk with you about the curriculum for the year, expectations, trips, homework patterns and all the other things they need you to know.  The meetings are to be held between 7th and 9th September.   Letters will go home this week. Mrs. Dralega

Music Grade exams

The examinations were very rigorous and the examiner quite tough in marking, but while there were several disappointing marks from other places we were delighted to see that all Rainbow students passed, several with merits and some with distinction.  Fantastic!  Congratulations.  There will be a concert in term 2 and we look forward to hearing you perform then.

End of term

To conclude another very busy and successful year we closed school on Thursday, 24th June with Year 6 beating Year 7 5 – 1 at football (to avenge a 3-2 defeat in rugby two days earlier) and the staff winning the Matthams Cup against the students thanks to an early goal from Coach Paul.  Soon after that we had a thoroughly entertaining assembly for the whole school on the main field with contributions from Year 1, Year 3, Lamda students, a farewell song from secondary school and a spectacular finale from Monsieur Mamert’s Burundian drummers and dancers accompanied by some Year 5 students.

School Council

Welcome back everybody from the summer holiday.  Form teachers, you are kindly requested to organised elections of your Student Board representatives by the end of the week.  Please hand in the names of your representative to me by Monday 6th September to enable us to have our 1st meeting on Wednesday, 8th September 2010.  Thank you.
Ms Imalingat, Student Board Coordinator.
