Welcome to Rainbow

We welcome the many new families that have joined Rainbow this term. 23 children joined us in primary and 11 in the secondary school. We wish you a long, productive and happy stay in Rainbow.

The first primary assemblies of the term were all about the New Year in different parts of the world and in different religions and cultures. We learnt that though the generally used start of the year is 1st January, the Orthodox Christians celebrate on 7th January, the Muslim New Year will be on November 15th and Jewish New Year in September. January 23rd marks the start of the Chinese New Year and we learned about how that new year will be celebrated.

In the secondary school assembly, Nick Fehling (electric guitar and vocals) and Monica Diefenhardt (vocals) provided wonderful entertainment in performing two songs, providing a fine prelude to the forthcoming International Talent Show.

Parent/Teacher Consultations

Year 11 parents and guardians are invited to meet the teachers on Thursday 19th January from 4 – 6p.m. in the secondary hall.  Mock exam results will be issued and decisions taken on IGCSE exam entries.  Students are encouraged to come along and join in the discussions about their progress.

Gala change of date

The date for the Key Stage 2 inter house swimming gala has been changed from 20th January to Friday 27th January, which is the day after NRM day public holiday. There will be a house meeting on Friday 20th January from 8.15 to 8.45am. In this house meeting, children will be able to choose their races.  There will be a second house meeting just before the gala on Wednesday 25th January to confirm the races you will be taking part in.

New Administration Block

The new administration block is almost ready to open. It will house a new larger uniform shop together with a larger sickbay and the usual offices and staffroom. Everyone will be offered the chance to have a good look around as soon as we have moved in.

Trips

Year 4/5 Rome trip

The trip to Rome was oversubscribed, leaving around 10 children on the waiting list. Some of those children have now been offered places on the trip. There will be an initial meeting for parents and guardians on Friday 20th January at 3pm in 4CO. This will be the first opportunity to go through the itinerary and begin the administrative procedures that are necessary for the trip.

French Trip to Paris

In May the Modern Languages Department will be making a fantastic trip to Paris, the beautiful capital of France. It will combine cultural visits with the opportunity for your son / daughter to practice and improve his / her spoken French.  The tour lasts eight days and includes excursions to the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame Cathedral, Versailles, Montmarte, as well as the Louvre, Pompidou Centre, Science Museum, Stade de France and the Parc Asterix.  The group will stay in a hotel.  We have chosen to use UK Connection, a very reputable and experienced company in organising school trips for International schools.  The visit is open to all students who are in Years 8, 9 and 10.  Priority will be given to the Year 10 students studying French at IGCSE.  Thereafter, the remaining spaces will be filled by other students who wish to take part in the tour.  All places are on a first come first served basis.  The cost of this tour will be about $2200 per student.  Letters with all details will be issued this week and are available from Miss Grignard in Room 24.

Year 10 Camping Trip 3rd – 5th Feb

Year 10 students are kindly reminded to return their trip consent slips as soon as possible and make payment before Friday 27th January 2012.  Miss Muchuchu

Trip to Fort Portal (Mon 28th Nov – Fri 2nd Dec)

When we were going to Fort Portal all of us were really excited; we brought big bags of clothes, shoes and all the things we needed.  When we entered the bus we had to wait for a long time.  After some time we reached ‘Y.E.S Hostel’ and we had to put our bags in our rooms or tents.  Suddenly we had to go to Toro Botanical Gardens; we had to go in 6 groups and we had to walk there.  Time passed and we reached there in a short time and in there our guides told us about many plants and flowers.  There was a plant called Rosemary and there was a great number of bee hives and bird nests.  At the end we had to go back to Y.E.S hostel to eat food and go to bed.   Ifeanyi Ibeanusi

On Tuesday 29th November, everyone got up very early as the teachers told us to wake up at 7:00a.m.  Some children got in trouble because they were caught making noise and brushing their teeth at 6:00a.m. in the morning.  At 7:00 we all got ready for breakfast and after we went to the wetlands.  At the wetlands, the guides took us through the tea fields, then we reached the wetland.  We had to bring boots because it was muddy.  While people were walking some got stuck.  People got so tired just trying to get out of the mud.  After having lunch we went to the buses and went back to Y.E.S hostel.  Most of us went to the craft shop to buy presents for our parents.  We had dinner and went to bed. Sainath 6SB

On Wednesday 30th November, we went to see caves and crater lakes.  When we got there, they told us a story about how the place came to life.  We first went behind the waterfall and we got wet.  Then we went to the caves and saw water dripping from some of the rocks.  Later, we had to climb up a tall hill but it was so hard and lots of people stopped and were left behind, although some people made it up the hill.  It was so much fun! Lowenna 6LB

On Thursday 1st December, we went climbing in the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains; it was fun but very tiring.  So on that day, after having breakfast, we went on the buses.  After some time we reached the place and we got in our groups.  There were three groups; high, medium and low.  Then, after getting in our groups, we set off for the campsite.  It was not very hard climbing up but we had to take a few breaks.  Soon, we were there but then it was not that tiring.   When we looked down, we could see many towns and hills.  It was beautiful!  Sometime later, we had lunch and then went back down.  It was a very fun day! Naomi 6SB

On Friday 2nd December, the long journey home.
