Science Fair The science department will be launching a science week starting Monday 13th February with a whole week of activities culminating in the science fair on Friday 17th February 2012. There will be many exciting and fun activities and displays throughout the week and at the science fair including a reptile display, volcanic eruptions, fruit batteries, a forensic area and lot, lots more. How can you become involved? - If you are Year 7, 8 or 9 you could work on a science project of your choice and if your project gets selected then you could display it at the science fair and get a prize. - You could be selected to take on teams from other schools in a science challenge. Five other schools have been invited who will bring along their best scientific brains in Year 7, 8 and 9 to come and tussle it out with Rainbow students. - If you are not in Key Stage 3 do not despair! You could enter the Science poetry competition or the science art competition which are open on any scientific theme. The winning entries will receive prizes. Look out for more information on how to enter. - Come and be part of the science week activities. - We will of course need lots of volunteers to help manage the event. We are counting on your participation and support to make the day a memorable one. Ms Geria Head of Science KS4 and 5 Talent Show The Talent Show 2011/2012 will be on 17th March at Wonder World. At present she is training to qualify to represent Uganda at the London Olympics 2012. We all wish Mildred well in her training for the Olympics. Mr. Edwards
Secondary School Club News 1. Note that clubs start this week; you should have made your choices of clubs by now and should stick to these throughout the term. Make sure you enter your name in the club register 2. Mrs. Mukwaba will run her club – “Reading club” on Tuesdays in room 16 but not badminton as earlier communicated. 3. Mr. Jasansky’s club (German for intermediate level) will take place on Wednesdays but not on Tuesdays as previously communicated. Mr. Kalanzi Clubs Coordinator Inter-house swimming gala Friday 27th January will be action-packed for Key Stage 2, as it will be the inter house swimming gala. A letter will go home today (Monday) informing parents about the programme. Thursday will be a public holiday (NRM day), and school will be closed so please make sure you remember to come to school wearing your PE kit and swim kit the following day.
Assemblies There was no KS2 assembly this week as we were all busy in house meetings choosing races to compete in for the gala. The infants wore their thinking caps to solve a series of puzzles from Mrs. Lwande in their assembly on Thursday. She certainly got us all wracking our brains. Happily, she only had to tell us the solution to one of the puzzles while both children and teachers managed to work out the rest. Thank you Miss Lwande. This week we had section assemblies in secondary school Key Stage 3 – as another taster for the forthcoming International Talent Show a group of Key Stage 3 students treated us to a series of performances. There were instrumental solos, dance routines and songs performed by some very talented students. We look forward to seeing them again at Talent Show auditions. In the Key Stage 4 assembly a group of IGCSE students gave a stimulating presentation on how a healthy diet can promote learning. Year 11 students were presented with certificates to recognise their work experience last term. The Sixth-Form assembly consisted of a debate on the controversial issue of abortion. Strong arguments.were put forward by both sides and supported by some good contributions from the floor. Despite the emotive nature of the subject, the debate was conducted in a proper and orderly manner. Reminder - Thursday 26th January is a public holiday and school will be closed for NRM Day

Biology Trip to UWEC and Botanical Gardens The Year 12 and 13 Biology classes had a trip to UWEC and Botanical Gardens on Tuesday, the 17th January. For the Year 13s the conservation programme at Uganda Wildlife Education Centre was directly relevant to the biodiversity topic whereas the Year 12s learnt a lot about several ecosystems that were artificially created. We discovered lots about every species kept in captivity. What we found most intriguing was that the temperature of the soil surrounding reptilian eggs determined the gender of the offspring, and that chimpanzees have 99.5% of human DNA. After the tour, we assembled in the conference room to ask the management a few questions. We were also lucky to learn about Japanese conservation programmes. At the botanical gardens we had a chance to visit the gene bank used to store the gene pools for several plants and we learnt about the entire process. Overall, it was an educative but fun trip. Dancing Competitions for Key Stage 1 Come ‘shake a leg’ with Mrs. Njoki and Ms Grace every Tuesday at 12:30p.m. in room 4. Well done Alvin. Our programme is follows: Tuesday 24th Jan – Year 1s, Tuesday 31st Jan - Year 2s, Tuesday 7th Feb – Year 2s. If you and your friends have dance routines you would like to perform, please see us before any of the Tuesdays. Thank you.
