RAINBOW BOOK WEEK

It’s Book Week in the Primary School!  The theme this year is FOOD.  This is a chance to explore the many ways in which writers have used all kinds of food in stories, poems, plays, newspaper articles, non-fiction books, and many more…

There will be a range of fun classroom activities focusing on food, as well as the following whole school events:

Ø  Book Worms’ Reading Tent every playtime and lunchtime

Ø  Book Buddies on Wednesday

Ø  Dress Up Day on Friday: a chance to dress up as your favourite book character or book (sandwich board style usually works well)

Ø  Whole school assembly on Friday, which includes a costume parade and announcements of the winners for each competition

The exciting competitions this year are:

1.        Donate a Book: This is a chance to share with others the books you have enjoyed so much.  The final count will be on Thursday, so don’t delay.

2.        Writing competition: We are looking for a range of interesting writing with food as a central part.  The judge this year is Mr. Edwards, who will announce the winners in each year group in Friday’s assembly.  Please hand your entries to your class teacher.  The closing date is Tuesday, 7th February.

3.        Costume Parade: As part of Dress Up Day, everyone in costume will join the parade during assembly and automatically be entered in the competition.  The person with the most creative costume in each year group will be chosen as winners.

Book Week is not just for children ─ parents and teachers can join in too.  Everyone can get involved by reading non-fiction and other books to children, encouraging children to participate in the competitions, and joining in the costume parade.  We hope everyone will enjoy the week.  Happy reading!

Middle School Model United Nation Trip to Nairobi

The MUN trip was amazing! Twenty KS3 students left for Nairobi on the 21st of January.  We started by doing some sight-seeing, visiting an elephant orphanage, a cultural centre and a crocodile farm.  Then it was down to business at the UN headquarters in Nairobi.  We were all allocated a country to represent and had the chance to participate in debates about issues facing the world.  The rules were very strict and gave us a real sense of discipline.  One of our delegations (Congo) had a resolution accepted for debate – and it was passed!  So congratulations to Meshack and his team.  After the conference finished we let out hair down at a disco on the Friday night where some interesting dance moves were on display!  On the last day we went to Nairobi National Museum, the Snake Park and we did a bit of shopping before catching the flight home.  We had a fantastic time and all learned a huge amount during our time in Nairobi.  A big thank you to the teachers who supported us throughout the trip. Roy and Emma Year 9

CARE Community will be having a bake sale on Monday, 6th February, 2012 at break time at the lunch area.  Please come and help us fundraise by buying lots of snacks!  Thank you. Meki Furaha

Careers

The 6th Form students benefitted from informative visits from representatives of five British universities who gave solid advice about UCAS applications and their institutions.  Should you have any further questions to ask any of the representatives, please do not hesitate to email them.  They would be delighted to hear from you. Today (6th February) seven students are attending the Canadian Fair at the Serena leaving school at 2:20p.m.  The fair closes at 5:00p.m.   Should any parents also wish to visit. Mrs. Volrath/Ms Thomas

Whitelines Buses will be parked at the lower area as long as the weather remains dry. Students are once again reminded to board their bus on time. After clubs at 4pm the Rainbow Club is OUT OF BOUNDS to all students.

The ground floor of the new admin block is now open and many children from primary and secondary have already had a chance to look around it.  However, students may only enter the building through the front entrance. The door next to the lunch area is for staff only. Students are not allowed upstairs where building work is still in progress. Mr. Toscano

Secondary Assembly

This week’s assembly was dedicated to music and we were treated to a series of splendid performances. The entire Year 7 gave a spirited performance of “What do we do with a drunken sailor?” Hyesu in Year 8 performed a splendid rendition of the Beethoven piece “Für Elise” and then the surprise of the afternoon came with Mr Colley’s dramatic performance of Toccata in D minor by JS Bach. Finally, Jade in Year 11 showed her considerable talent with the song “Shark in the water”. Well done to all these performers for displaying their superb musical skills.

Primary School Assemblies

This week Key Stage 1 enjoyed a wonderful performance from 1N about the things we are thankful for, such as our parents, friends, school and many more.  Thank you 1N for reminding us about these important things.  In Key Stage 2, we were treated to a poetry bonanza from 5CB.  After explaining what they had been learning about free verse and metaphor, the students in 5CB recited a variety of interesting and also very funny poems.  Thank you 5CB for making us laugh so much!

U11 boys and U11 girls Vs Aga Khan

The first stage of the football season starts on Tuesday 7th, with games against Aga Khan away.  Please join me in wishing them the best of luck.  A disappointing turnout by Year 7 girls will mean a young and inexperienced U11 girls team will have to be fielded, giving an opportunity for the Year 6 and 5 girls. Coach Dan

Inter-house Pictionary – Primary

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday this week (7th – 10th) sees the first inter-house Pictionary competition ever at Rainbow School.  Posters have been sent out to all relevant classes.  Please meet in the ICT laboratory at 12:50 to join the fun. Mademoiselle Vivash, Coach Dan, Miss Volrath

Secondary Swimming Gala

The secondary swimming gala is this Friday 10th February.  Students are reminded that uniform for the day is strictly a house shirt and full PE kit.  No other clothing is acceptable.  Get involved in as many events as you can to make it a great day for all involved.  May the best house win!
