Independence Assembly disappointment

A massive storm hit Kampala on the morning of 8th October.  It flooded the field but the Afrique Troupe said they were still prepared to perform their programme of traditional Ugandan dances for our Independence Day Assembly.  Indeed, they said they were already on their way to the school when we phoned them at 12:40.
Sadly, the rain and traffic in town prevented them reaching their destination and we all had to stay in class for the last half an hour of the day instead of enjoying an exhibition of dances from around the country.  We had enjoyed a good day up to then with all the red, yellow and black and traditional costumes of non-uniform day and a dance-off to raise money for Habitat for Humanity.  We cannot tell you exactly how much the Student Board raised in secondary school from non-uniform day because 10U and 10K had still not submitted their money by Friday afternoon.

Dance Off

Last Wednesday, the Habitat for Humanity committee organised ‘Dance Off’ and raised 275,000/= towards the charity organisation.  Thanks to all who participated.  Information about who won the prize, will be in the next Weekly Rainbow. Ms Imalingat

Examinations start tomorrow (Tuesday 14th)

The October/November sitting of the Cambridge examinations begins tomorrow with a chemistry practical in the chemistry laboratory after break.   On Thursday there is a mathematics examination in room 12.  After half term the examinations will hopefully take place in the new building if it’s ready.  Information will be given once we can confirm use of the new block.  For this week please observe ‘Silence’ signs and any room changes you are told about. TODAY AT 1:15 IN ROOM 4 THERE WILL BE A SPECIAL BRIEFING FOR ALL CANDIDATES.

Just say ‘No’

On Friday we had a special secondary school assembly when Joshua Ssebunnya, Research Officer and Psychologist at Butabika Hospital for the mentally ill told us that taking drugs is very likely to lead to mental health problems and a ruined life.  The message was quite simple.  If anyone tries to tempt you into taking drugs, be a strong, positive person and Just Say ‘No.’

Footnote to Awards Evening

We also handed out Cambridge certificates in Friday’s assembly during which, it came to my attention, that, if we were to aggregate IGCSE passes achieved in Year 10 and Year 11, Michele Ciantia would have actually been the highest achieving Rainbow student with 11 passes including 4A*s.  As it was, we only took into account the Year 11 results and so Parth Shah took the prize which is also very well deserved.  On a more negative note Emma Okino has been stripped of the Boarder of the Year award from 2007 as he returned the trophy vandalised irreparably meaning we had no trophy to hand out this year.

Football News

On Friday the Rainbow senior boys team put in a magnificent first half display of attacking football with Nemanja and Salim each scoring twice at home to Stena Hill.  It was enough to see us home with a 4-3 victory.  The staff then took on the Owino Businessmen.  Half way through the second half Rainbow led 1-0 from a Mr. Urquhart goal and the opposition had just had a player sent out.  We immediately let in 2 goals and lost the match 2-1.

During the half term there is to be a three-day soccer camp organised at Rainbow.  It will take place from Tuesday 21st to Thursday 23rd October and will be from 9:00a.m. to 10:30a.m. for 6 to 11 year olds and from 11:00a.m. to 1:00p.m. for 12 to 15 years olds.  It is aimed at promoting skills, team spirit & fun and costs just 10,000/= for 3 days and 5000/= for one day.  If you are interested pleased collect a letter from Lydia at reception.

Bug Busting

On Friday a letter went home telling you about bug busting day.  Over the weekend you should all have checked your hair for lice.  Today the school nurse will be screening primary school children for head lice.

Rainbow participation to the Lire en fête reading festival at Alliance Française

12 Rainbow students went to Alliance Française and represented the school exceptionally well. Aime Stephane Rwabugiri alias Benny did not only write two wonderful poems but also impressed the Director of Alliance Française who declared him as Membre d’ honneur meaning VIP status. Our francophones and non-francophones did really well as they wrote and read seven interesting, amusing and very powerful poems or tales.

The level of French (ideas and structure) that those Rainbow pupils produced just shows how strong and dedicated are our students. We hope that Benny will have an opportunity to do his slam poetry during one of our Secondary assemblies with a simultaneous translation achieving a Franglais fusion or a Frenglish si vous préférez!  I would like to thanks personally Hannah, Laurianne, Gayathry, Rebekah, Jacinta, Sanjana, Nathalie, Yvonne, Fabiola, Benny, Jonathan, Leyla and Madam Muchuchu who kindly accompanied us. Monsieur Blondeau

Primary School News

The Year 4 Skipathon was finished this week but no one could beat Lula’s record of 200 skips.  In fact the best from Year 4 was by Muthonie of Impala with 95 skips.

The best skippers were:
Rwenzori - Zoziane - 82 skips
Impala - Muthoni - 95 skips
Ssesse - Lula - 200 skips
Kyoga - Selam - 137 skips

Year 4  - Muthoni -    95 skips
Year 5  - Lula -   200 skips

Overall: Lula 200 skips

Let us see if anybody from Year 6 can beat this record or maybe it will be one of the teachers.  This will be held after half term.  Mrs. Mohan

We had only one assembly this week –  6CW have been exploring the fantasy genre.  They acted out Jack Reynell's story which was very imaginative and well constructed.  Thank you 6CW.

Primary School Swimiming Gala
This Friday we have the Year 2 – 6 swimming gala at Colours Club.   Races begin at 9:30 and parents are invited to come along and support.

Cheerleading  - there will be a cheerleading competition just after lunch on Friday.  Most teams are already practising.  Please let your team captain have a copy of any music you will use. It should last no longer than 2 minutes.  Judges will give points for cheerleading that is clear, encourages your team, and is lively.  Remember, cheerleading and supporting your team members throughout the day also can earn your team points.  No cheerleading practises on Wednesday lunchtime please.

Art Work of the Week

This week’s Artwork of the week is by KEVINE INEZA and LINDA OHAIRWE both in 9G for their imaginative compositions using pen and ink.  Well done.  Mr. Ufoyuru

Work Experience

Secondary School will be a little quieter this week as 63 Year 11 students will be out and about in the Kampala district on their work experience.  This is an initiative we started in 2002 as part of the citizenship programme and this is the seventh time that it has been expertly organised by Mrs. Walugembe.  It is flattering to hear that the idea and format is now being copied almost exactly by another international school in Kampala.

Kyoga 9 points ahead

Thanks to a great haul of points in primary school, Ssesse almost caught up with Kyoga this week
Rwenzori    2705 points
Impala    2676 points
Ssesse    2804 points
Kyoga    2813 points

… and finally there will be a Wet the Teacher event later this week.  See posters for details.
